Spend an entire day discovering the marvels of Abu Simbel’s temples, one of Egypt’s most illustrious landmarks. Leave straight from Aswan to reach Abu Simbel. Start your journey in the early hours and head south for a 3-hour drive to Abu Simbel, positioned on Lake Nasser’s banks. This world-famous location bears the sun temples commanded by Ramses II to be sculpted from the limestone hills.
The Great Temple of Ra-Harakhte and Amon-Re houses the four renowned gigantic statues of Ramses II, sitting pridefully, overlooking the desert. In contrast, the Temple of Hathor displays 6 colossal statues, dedicated to the goddess of love adorned with a cow’s head, constructed in tribute to Ramses’s cherished wife, Queen Nefertari.
Once part of a mountain, the temple is now topped by a synthetic peak, designed to imitate its original surroundings. Ingeniously, the initial temple was built so that on every 22nd February and 22nd October, the dawn sun would illuminate between the Ramses statues and reach the sanctuary’s deep corners.
