Castelo de S. Jorge - São Jorge Castle is one of the most emblematic and important sights of Lisbon. Now part of the noble area of the medieval citadel (Alcazaba) is made up of the castle, the ruins of the former royal palace and part of a residence for the elite of that time. It is classified as a National Monument and today has gardens, belvederes, a citadel, terraces, a small museum, an archaeological nucleus, a periscope (invented by Leonardo da Vinci in the 16th century); a shop and a café - restaurant, Casa Leão.
This castle was built by the Muslims in the mid 11th century as a defense of the elite who lived in this citadel.
