Cusco

Cusco - We will collect you at 4:30am from your hotel lobby and drive for 3 hours in our private van to Soraypampa (trailhead). As we travel through curvy roads in the Andes, there are views of the villages of Iscuchaca and Limatambo, the surrounding valleys and the famous spectacular snowcapped Salkantay Mountain. At the trailhead (Soraypampa), we have our breakfast while enjoying the views of the Humantay (5,900mt / 19,356ft) and Salkantay (6,217mt / 20,396ft) Mountain glaciers. We gradually climb through Andean valley landscapes before arriving at Sorococcha (4,400m / 14,517ft) for lunch. Onwards and upwards for one more hour we reach Apacheta Pass (4,650m / 15,367ft). We are breathless with the most spectacular views of snowcapped mountains such as Salkantay(6,277mt), Humantay, Huayanay, agitated white rivers, and small humble lakes. A short 35-minute hike takes us to the turquoise Salkantay Lake. Then hike down for 2 hours to our campsite at Huayracmachay.

Wonderful, but challenging - Carlos and the team were amazing. He tailored the tour to our interests. The horseman and chefs were wonderful. The food was a buffet style traditional Peruvian food. The hiking was challenging, but well worth it. We combined the first two days of hiking so we would have the trails to ourselves. It was a wonderful experience. On the last day we had a 3 hour tour of Machu Picchu. It was plenty of time for photos. We didn’t fell rushed the entire trip. Overall it was a wonderful experience and we would highly recommend.

5 Stars - Carlos was an excellent guide for our 4 day Sakantay trek! Every recommendation regarding timing, what to bring each day, etc was spot on. He was clearly very knowledgeable about Peruvian culture and Incan history- he answered all of our questions very thoroughly! His English was excellent, and he was always happy to speak Spanish very slowly and clearly for us to practice. The staff on the trek were very accommodating, from hot chocolate delivered to our tent each morning to a fresh baked cake to celebrate completing the hardest part of the trek. We were very thankful for the horses to carry our belongings! Every detail of the trek was taken care of from pickup to dropoff back in Cusco. Highly recommend!

Amazing experience with a great guide, chefs, and horseman! - This was the best trip ever! It’s a really challenging hike but our guide Tony made it great! Tony has a wealth of knowledge and he talked so thoroughly about the Inca history and explaining each mountain in depth and about different things we would see for example animals! The chefs, Leandro and Anselmo, were incredible. They cooked us some of the most delicious foods ever! Thank you so much for looking after us! And also a huge thank you to Nicanor who organised all of our and the teams belongings to be transported to the correct places by mules. He was also so kind and helpful when my husband suffered from altitude sickness, thank you for that! The whole team were really great and I’m so happy that I got to experience this with them. They made it very memorable and enjoyable. The sights were incredible and definitely worth it! I will be back next year for the Inca trail!

Best Trek of My Life - This was the best trip I have ever taken. Carlos was the BEST guide, very accommodating, caring, informative, and allowed us to go at our own pace while still being so encouraging every step of the way. Night one we slept right next to a glacier, night two we slept next to Incan ruins in the heart of the valley of the mountains. We were given coffee and tea as a wake up call every morning, and 3 very large, absolutely incredible meals per day. Our chef, Lucio, and his wife, Michaela, and Nichanor, our horseman, were SO accommodating. I had some altitude sickness and they did absolutely everything to help. The chef allowed my boyfriend to come fishing with him for dinner, and we ate what we caught! We only saw two other couples the entire trek, which made for an extremely private tour that was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced on a hike. If you are going to choose any hike in Peru, choose this one!!!! You’ll hike through SO many different landscapes, up and down mountains and through valleys, across rivers, etc. It is slightly physically demanding (mostly just due to the altitude), but the most rewarding few days I’ve ever had.

Trek of a lifetime! - This trek has honestly been one of the highlights if not the highlight of the trip! We had no idea how to pick which trek to do but the review we went off for the Wilderness Salkanty hike was absolutely spot on and did not disappoint. Our guide Carlos was absolutely incredible and so knowledgeable about the Inca history and gave us many very interesting stories throughout the trek and was very patient with us, stopping when we needed and even taking pictures for us. The food was also just fabulous. Every meal Julio our chef made was healthy and very delicious and he used all local food and it was so great to try many new things. The Horseman Victor was very attentive and worked very hard along with the porter Sergio to make sure all our tents were set up before we got to our next destination. They even brought us a hot coffee every morning in our tents and gave us a hot water bottle at night to keep us warm. All in all the experience was just amazing and they all made us feel so welcome and very looked after. Thank you to the whole team for making this an unforgettable experience. I would absolutely recommend this trek to absolutely anyone!

Salkantay Trek - We did the wilderness Salkantay trek. We had the most amazing time. Carlos, our guide along with Julio, Sergio, our chefs and victor our horseman were simply incredible. Carlos was very knowledgeable when it came to our hike, talking about the nature and history we came across our trek. He was always super attentive and looked after us incredibly well. Our team of porters and chef long with the horsemen worked incredibly hard to ensure we were so well looked after and the food was incredible all the time. Very healthy and varied and delicious. I highly recommend Sam travel Peru as I really get the feeling that they look after their staff very well. Our booking process was simple and straightforward and they couldn’t have been more helpful and very responsive when it came to answering any questions we had. The wilderness trek was such a highlight with the mix of busy at time such as the humanity lake to being completely on your on with your group and enjoying the peaceful surrounding that you don’t get on the classic Inca trails. Thank you Carlos, Julio, Victor and Sergio for making our Machu Picchu trip extra memorable.

Salkantay con Camino Inca 7 dias - I did the Salkantay + Inca Trek (7days) with my partner. It was beautiful trek, hard at some points, ascending up to 4800mts. Our registered guide, Auqui, was very professional and gave us the right support and motivation. Additionally he told us a lot of information about the history of Perú and we learnt a lot about it. Great guide and great person. Thank you Auqui! Also, the team did very good job, specially our cooker Mario and assistant Pancho. Highly recommend!!

Great Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu with Carlos! - We did the beautiful 4-day Salkantay trek in November. Although at some points quite challenging, it was one of the best treks we ever did! The whole team, from our awesome and knowledgable guide Carlos to the chefs (they even prepared delicious vegan food and a cake) and the porter, were super kind and attentive. We could always walk at our own pace and there were always options along the way (walk a bit more or a bit less). The tents were very cozy too. The trek itself has very stunning views. When we arrived in Machu Picchu, we were exhausted but very happy:). Machu Picchu and Wayna Pikchu were just amazing. In total, it was a great experience and we can only recommend this tour by Sam Travel Peru and our guide Carlos!
