Marrakech

Marrakesh Menara Airport - We will depart from Marrakech at 07:00 and head towards Tizn’t Tichka. At an altitude of 2206 meters, it is the highest mountain pass in North Africa. Along the way we will experience the colors of the High Atlas Mountains, and pass through picturesque Berber villages. Our descent will take us to Ait Benhaddou kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will have lunch in a local restaurant and join our guide for a tour of the site.

From here, we will continue on to
Agdz and the wonderful Draa Valley. We will take a break in Zagora before reaching the village of M’Hamid, where our camels will be waiting for us. An hour long camelback trek will bring us to our camp in time for the sunset. Dinner will be served by the campfire as you enjoy the peace and tranquility of this very special place. Overnight in the desert camp in the dunes of Erg Lihoudi.

Day 2: Erg Lihoudi Dunes/M’ Hamid

M’Hamid - The sun rising over the dunes is a unique experience for the more adventurous among you, with breakfast served soon after. We will mount the camels again for the trek back to M’Hamid and the opportunity for a hot shower at a hotel. Our return route will take us back through Zagora and Agdz, with a lunch break and a guided visit of the cinema studios(optional) in Ourzazate. We will arrive back in Marrakech at around 18:00.

Additional Information

Our exclusive 2-day Marrakech desert journey to Erg Lihoudi in the Sahara desert, located near Zagora, is one of our pre-arranged private 2-day dessert trips specifically created for those with restrained time who nonetheless wish for a comprehensive desert encounter. Erg Lihoudi dunes are feasibly the superior desert spot that can be reached in merely two days. We emphatically advise against visits to either the Tinfou dunes or other minor dunes around Zagora, given their overly touristy nature and consequently subpar travel experience.

  • May be operated by a multi-lingual guide

Wonderful two day trip - Organised this tour from Marrakesh. As with all things where you book online, you are never sure of what to expect. First thing to check was that these guys are officially licences with the Moroccan Tourism Board. Ismail sent copies of the paperwork, but we also found out that Police can check this at any of the many roadblocks you encounter on the way. First thing to note is there is a lot of driving. Ismail was supernatural… I couldn’t have done it in a day, that’s for sure. The Tichka pass was something we were a little nervous of having seen various stories and images. However the road was widened 2 years ago and is nothing like as scary as it may once have been. It is spectacular though. We stopped off along the way at various locations. One was a women’s cooperative producing argan oil products. Of course we paid tourist prices, but happy to do so in the circumstances, however the when ringing up the sale, I worked out that 50% of what I paid was going somewhere and while there a man came in and took a lot of cash from the woman at the till. This was perhaps our only reservation, it nothing to do with the tour itself. Ismail made the call for us to head out to the camp sooner and do the various excursions on the second day. I think this was a good option as it gave us more time in camp that evening. It meant arriving back later in Marrakesh, which was ok for us, but meant a longer day for him, but was much appreciated. We did stop for a good break at his brother’s hotel.l for lunch. Note it has a pool, so take your swimmers. We went in our spare clothes as we hadn’t known about the pool stop, but we had about an hour and a half break, which meant it was cooler for our arrival In the desert. The ride to the camp as the sun was setting was fantastic. The hour ride was more like 99 mins as our lovely guide Ahmed was really happy to stop to take photos for us and he knew just when to break for water. It was less hot by then too, although being July, we were still up in the high 30’s by sunset. Again, as it was so hot, we found that the camp was empty as we arrived with only four other people jointing us about an hour later. Camp was relaxed and I worked out when Ismail stopped en route in Zagora that this was run by Caravan du Sud, who have look reviews in the Lonely Planet. These were merited. Our accommodation had en suite that we had to pay extra for, but was necessary for us, but maybe not for everyone. When the camp was this quiet it might not have been an absolute requirement. The rooms and linen were spotless. The LP suggests that some of the desert camps at Erg Lihoudi were tired and in need of renovation… this is not one. It was more that we expected in the desert. It’s not the super luxe experience that our villa hosts tried to suggest, but it felt far more in keeping with the desert surroundings. It was really relaxed. After some tea with our hosts we were left to decompress before our meal. The meal was the delicious. Too much food as seems to be the way in Morocco. We have a mix of vegetarians and non-vegetarians. All parties were well fed. After this another bit of relaxation and some star gazing before music around the camp fire. We all slept well. The tents have no fans, but considering the heat of the day had kept relatively cool. Of course we’ve spent a few days already in Marrakesh so have gradually acclimatised. Besides after the journey and the camel ride we were all pretty tired. Next morning watching the sun rise over the dunes was very special. Get yourselves up early for this. It is worth it. We then had our typical Moroccan breakfast and a quick bit of sand boarding. The camel ride back was optional… some might prefer a rod in the 4x4, but it was a quicker ride than the previous evening in quickly rising temperatures and fewer photo stops… it took about an hour in a straight line versus 30mins in the 4x4. We stopped again at the hotel In Zagora, but for a drink rather than a swim. Then three extra tourist stops on the way. First was a boutique of ancient Berber crafts. There was surprisingly little pressure to buy (we didn’t) but a really full and interesting explanation of the many wonderful goods on display, many of them ancient…. It was more like a museum. Next stop was the Atlas Film studios. A tour was optional, and we were undecided because of the heat, but very glad that we did pay the 80 MAD each. The sets are really interesting and you get the feeling that with CGI this is the increasingly the main income here. I’m doing this we opted to eat at a service station close by to save time. Food was good and the place was very new, spotless and the food good if less authentic and more European. It did allow us more time in the day though, which was well spent. We used the rest of the day for a tour around Ait Ben Haddou, with a guide. You could go without one easily enough, but happy to spend 50MAD per person to support the local economy. Thoroughly recommend this stop. The place is really special. You can see it getting overcrowded in high season though. We thankfully only passed one other group during our visit, which was probably in the hottest part of the day, but there was plenty of shade and a lot of wind. Hold onto you hats. The views were wonderful, so even in the heat, as long as you stop in the shade, it’s worth it…. Perhaps with event in Europe, we were overly cautious about the Moroccan heat, but so far it has been good. Only tip really is to grab your water before you enter the old town as you are a captive customer by then. The drive back was via the Ounila Valley. I’d definitely suggest this to your guide. Tichka was spectacular, but this route was truly stunning. Passing Kasbah after Kasbah with the lush green of the river valley contrasting with the reds of the rock and the setting sun. The road is narrower than Tichka, so a bit slower, but well worth it. Thank you Ismail for making this executive decision even though it meant prolonging the tour. It was very much appreciated. All in all I thoroughly recommend this. If you’re English speaking, try to get Ismail to accompany you. Most of their clients are Spanish speaking and they are seeking more UK clients. Ismail’s English is great so if you can get him or another English speaking guide, don’t be put off by the fact that most reviews here are from Spain… they will make arrangements for you. This two day tour was jam packed. Yes we were tired after, but we’re are relaxing now with many special memories. We had other options, but very glad we took this one! Thanks again Ismail. My sister is coming to Marrakesh next year with her Spanish family, we will definitely recommend that she uses you.

An incredible experience! - Our family of five had the most incredible trip to the dunes. We packed so much into the trip including two camel rides, sand dune surfing, swimming, and amazing visits including to the incredible UNESCO site Ait Ben Haddou and the film studios. Ismail took us on the tour and was so friendly and helpful. The camp itself, which we arrived at by camel, was beautifully situated in the dunes. The tents were great (we had one with a bathroom), the staff were so friendly (and played the drums by the camp fire in the evening), and the evening meal was delicious. We would thoroughly recommend the trip and are so happy to have been with Ismail and his company. Despite going at the start of the summer season (July), the temperatures were manageable. We would certainly do it again. Thank you!

Amazing experience in the desert - The tour was fantastic, in the amazing company of our driver Ismael whose friendliness and knowledge made even the lengthy car journey extremely enjoyable. Other highlights include a fantastic sunset camel ride with guide Ahmed, which was an unforgettable experience - don’t expect to escape slightly tired legs though! We briefly stopped off at Ait Ben Haddou for some amazing views, and for a tour at the Atlas Film Studios which was a great experience, especially if you have watched the featured films such as Gladiator. Once at the desert camp, we were met with some beautiful tea, and a huge tagine (both the vegetarian and meat option was great). The tents were extremely clean and spacious, and waking up in the morning to the view of the sand dunes was incredible. It was an amazing two days and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone.

Magical trip to the Sahara desert - This trip was an absolute highlight of Morocco. Our driver was very knowledgeable, easy going, friendly and his English was excellent by the local standards. He did his best to incorporate our wished into the program. Drive to the desert camp was long, but we enjoyed the views on the way. The camp was almost empty as it was off season, but we had some great local food and music in the evening by the local berbers. We caught both the sunset and sunrise over the dunes, which was absolutely magical. The tents were comfortable enough and the beds were done with clean bedding. There were showers with warm water and clean toilets. I absolutely adore camels and we were able to find some extra time to leave the camp on camel back, just as we arrived. We stopped at the desert city, Ouarzazate, which was on my MUST VISIT list. Our driver was able to secure us a local guide, who gave us a great tour of the place.

Great stay deep in the desert - The trip to the desert was GREAT. We had a wonderful experience. The camp is realy deep in the desert. The road to the camp itself is an adventure. Camp location is just next to the dunes so you can climp them right away for the sunset or sunrise. Meals were great. We had bonefire with berber music. View of the sea of dunes is experience you cannot miss. Camels roam in the neighbourhood of the camp so you can interact with them. In the end the whole experience is worth every penny. I highly recommend going to the desert with Zagora Desert Travel.
