Additional Information

The Great Living Chola Temples are a testament to the Chola dynasty’s exceptional contributions to architecture, sculpture, painting, and the art of bronze casting. This heritage site encompasses three majestic temples from the 11th and 12th centuries: the Brihadisvara Temple at Thanjavur, the Brihadisvara Temple at Gangaikondacholisvaram, and the Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram. Built by Rajendra I, the Temple of Gangaikondacholisvaram was finished in 1035. Its towering vimana (sanctuary tower) reaches 53 meters, featuring indented angles and a subtly arching contour upwards, which is a distinct contrast to the more rigid and imposing tower found in Thanjavur. The temple complex of Airavatesvara at Darasuram, a construction of Rajaraja II, boasts a 24-meter high vimana and a sculpted representation of the deity Shiva.
