Witness the transformation of fresh milk into delectable Gruyères using large copper cauldrons and massive curd presses. Discover how the region produces approximately 48 wheels daily, each undergoing a thorough inspection by Gruyères AOP before receiving the official label. After the demonstration, participants can savor the rich, nutty flavor of genuine Gruyères by sampling cheese directly from the wheel.
• Gruyeres - A brief scenic hike will lead the group to the charming town of Gruyères, the birthplace of the renowned sweet and salty cheese that shares its name. Situated in the picturesque Fribourg canton, this medieval town exudes rustic charm. Explore the cobblestone pathways, enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding countryside en route to the hilltop Castle of Gruyères. This magnificent fortress, dating back to the 13th century, was once home to the infamous Counts of Gruyères. Visitors can delve into the castle’s intriguing history and wander through treasure-filled museum rooms and ancient ruins. After the tour, a quick lunch stop is planned, but participants are advised not to overindulge.
• Broc - With stomachs full of cheese, the group will proceed to the final destination: the Cailler Chocolate Factory. This legendary cocoa haven was established by the grandfather of Swiss chocolate, François-Louis Cailler, whose secret ingredients are still used today. His iconic chocolate is celebrated for its rich, creamy taste, achieved by using condensed milk instead of the typical milk powder found in most other brands. On certain days, master chocolatiers will demonstrate their craft using various foolproof techniques, allowing participants to sample these creations and take chocolates home or enjoy them on the return journey.
