Baofeng Lake – A Hidden Gem in Zhangjiajie
Baofeng Lake (宝峰湖), situated within the Wulingyuan Scenic Area near Zhangjiajie city in Hunan Province, offers a uniquely stunning waterscape that contrasts with the towering mountain peaks for which the region is renowned. Its creation is particularly fascinating as it was formed by chance: in the 1970s, locals constructed a dam to store water for irrigation, resulting in a breathtaking high-mountain lake encircled by lush forests and dramatic stone peaks.
The lake extends approximately 2.5 km in length with a depth of around 72 meters, and its water is remarkably clear and emerald green, nourished by rainfall, underground springs, and mountain runoff. As you sail across the tranquil water, it often resembles a “jade mirror” reflecting the surrounding sandstone pillars and trees, imparting a dreamlike, almost fairytale quality to the landscape.
