- House of Wonders (Beit-el-Ajaib) - Known as the House of Wonders, Beit el Ajaib was constructed around 1883 as the ceremonial palace for Sultan Barghash. It stands as one of the most notable and splendid buildings in Zanzibar and all of East Africa. Remarkably, it was the first building in East Africa to feature electricity and an electric elevator! Beit al Ajaib is visible from afar when approaching Zanzibar by sea, serving as a symbol of Zanzibar’s rich heritage and is frequently depicted on postcards and in history books.
- People’s Palace Museum - The Palace Museum is a grand structure with castellated battlements overlooking the Indian Ocean on Mizingani Road in Stone Town. Initially named the Sultan’s Palace, it was constructed in the late 1890s for the sultan’s family and is the most recent of the Sultan’s palaces in Zanzibar. In 1911, it became the official residence of the Sultan of Zanzibar. Following the 1964 Revolution, when Sultan Jamshid was overthrown, it was renamed the Peoples’ Palace and used for government offices. In 1994, it was transformed into a museum dedicated to the history and lifestyle of the Sultans of Zanzibar.
- St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Cathedral - The Roman Catholic cathedral of St. Joseph is a significant historical building situated in the Baghani area of Stone Town, Zanzibar. Constructed by French missionaries between 1893 and 1898, the design was created by the same French architect who designed the cathedral in Marseilles, France. The cathedral’s defining feature is its twin spires, reminiscent of those in Marseille’s church, which are prominent elements of Stone Town’s skyline and can be easily seen from a distance off the coast. Despite these striking spires, the church itself can be challenging to locate while navigating the narrow streets of Baghani.
- Freddie Mercury Museum - The Freddie Mercury Museum is situated in the heart of Stone Town, Zanzibar, in the same house where Freddie and his family lived until they relocated to England in 1963.
The Museum offers a comprehensive account of Zanzibar from the late 1800s, the birthplace of Farrokh Bulsara, his connection to the Zoroastrian Religion, his childhood and upbringing in Zanzibar, followed by his education in Panchgani, India, and his remarkable journey to becoming one of the greatest stars of all time. Farrokh Bulsara was born on Thursday, 5th September 1946 in Zanzibar, Stone Town to parents Bomi Bulsara and Jer Bulsara. Farrokh means lucky and fortunate. Farrokh and his family were adherents of the Zoroastrian religion, one of the world’s oldest faiths.
