History brought to life - As history enthusiasts, my husband and I are always looking for ways to immerse ourselves in it. So, of course we had a very enjoyable visit to this museum. It is chalked full of information, replicas and even features some great outdoor living history exhibits. The indoor part of the museum has tons of educational exhibits and films. And then there's the interactive outdoor area featuring re-enactments, a fort, and people dressed in period clothing who are happy to answer questions. There are also replicas of ships from the 17th century -- some of which you can get on and explore! You can also walk through some of the buildings in the fort and watch demonstrations. There is a lot to do at this museum so you will need at least an entire day to properly explore it.

Excellent exhibits - The weather was bitter cold the day of my visit, so I didn't spend as long as I would have liked. I probably could have spent the whole day though. I loved Jamestown Settlement. Even though there's less restored than Williamsburg, I actually found it more interesting because it portrays a time about 150 years earlier, when the settlement was still new and people were just trying to figure out how to survive. I started at Paspahegh Town. I loved entering the dwellings and seeing how they would have looked when people were living in them. The docents were also very good. One gave me a demonstration on how to scrape the fur off a hide and then let me try it myself, which was cool. I spoke to another docent for awhile, who answered a bunch of my questions. I went down to the ships next. It's really incredible how they crossed the ocean in such small vessels. The docents again were very knowledgeable. I finished the outdoor exhibits at the fort. It was so interesting. Having just been at Williamsburg, it was like being in a completely different world. There were several costumed interpreters there. The one in the guard house was so funny. Another was a musician who gave demonstrations on period instruments. He even made his fiddle himself. I was there in time for the Christmas Lord of Misrule performance, which was interactive, informative, and entertaining. I was very cold at that point, so I went to their indoor museum. It was truly fantastic. It's a wonderful exhibit, and much bigger than I expected. I was there for about an hour and a half and didn't get to finish. I probably needed another hour. It covers the pre-settlement period up through the 1690s. There are artifacts, dioramas, documents, reproductions, and pieces of art. The signs were informative but engaging for lay people. If you like history, don't miss it - it's fascinating.

Great way to see the historic triangle! - It was great to have the unlimited opportunities to revisit the sites because when one is traveling with kids, smaller chunks of time can be much more effective than a longer chunk of time. The living history portions were great for kids and adults alike, and I highly recommend the experience.

Fun and Educational - This was our family‘s favorite activity. The Jamestown settlement was really awesome. You have the ability to tour through Native American lodges and similar dwellings for the settlers. The kids especially enjoyed the demonstrations by period costumed guides.
