Fantastic Tour! - Loved the combination of history with the ghost element, guides were extremely friendly and engaging. Despite unfortunate weather we had a really good time and left feeling spooked out and excited to explore some destinations further, such as the Golden Fleece. Excellent value for money, would even consider doing it again.

Fantastic! - Me and my sister attended the Shadows of York and had Mckenzie and Charlie as our guides. Both so captivating, spooky, and gripping. A nice mixture of spooky and gory tales of York and Mckenzie told us multiple spooky tales of our hotels. Both full of facts and stories. We were so sad it finished! Can't wait to book another one. Thank you both 💓

Fantastic tour - A brilliant tour, really informative and the lady told the story in a way to keep us all captivated. Kids loved it. Did have a gentleman who was in training who wasn’t as engaging - he just needed to relax more . Apart from all that excellent tour - thank you

Fantastic tour with our guide Josh!! - Josh was fantastic. We very much enjoyed his storytelling, and could tell that he genuinely loves the topics. The tour itself is great. It takes you to a few corners of York that you may not see otherwise. It is well-paced, and a decent length of time. Not too intensive at all. Definitely recommend this tour to anyone spending time in York. Thank you again!!!

Ghost stories overshadowed Yorks real Horrible Histories - This was my third York ghost walk. I’ve always booked the tour that leaves from the Golden Fleece, but this time I thought I’d change it up and try Shadows of York. The booking and information process was faultless. We met our guide 10 minutes before the start time outside the Guy Fawkes Inn as instructed. From the outset it was obvious the guide had a strong stage presence – his booming voice actually reminded me of Brian Blessed. The tour is advertised as ghost stories and horrible histories. What has always intrigued me most about these walks is learning just how brutal our ancestors could be to one another – something I personally find far more believable (and interesting) than ghost stories. I booked this tour for myself, my husband, and another couple who hadn’t done a ghost walk before, assuring them they’d love the stories of horror and depravity from York’s past. Unfortunately, I was disappointed that the balance leaned far more heavily towards ghost stories than historical content. Despite starting outside the Guy Fawkes Inn, there was no mention of Guy Fawkes at all. Dick Turpin wasn’t mentioned either, and the behaviour of the Vikings was barely touched upon. One of the most fascinating parts of these tours for me is The Shambles, given its long and bloody history, but we were rushed straight through it without stopping. We were asked to note the shrine to Margaret Clitherow in passing, then walked out the other end and across to another paved area where the story was explained instead. I assume this was because it was a Saturday night and they expected The Shambles to be busy, but it wasn’t at that time – and other tour groups were happily stopping there and sharing its history. The mention of the butchers’ windowsills felt very brief and didn’t convey the grim reality of what The Shambles was like in its early days. Overall, I felt the tour lacked historical depth and focused too much on ghostly apparitions rather than documented events. After all, it’s far easier to believe recorded history than the word of ghost-seers. I was particularly disappointed for our friends, as they didn’t get the rich, history-heavy experience we’ve enjoyed on previous York ghost walks.

Josh did apologise at the... - Josh did apologise at the beginning of the tour saying that he has painful wisdom teeth and it may be harder to understand him. I felt maybe due to factors such as above, cold and wet weather, the tour felt on auto-pilot. Kind of forced performance. Guide was friendly. I just felt that the stories lacked enthusiasm and passion. It was hard to understand what was being said at times. Some of the stories were interesting, just the way it was told lacked finer details and energy. I wouldn’t go again or recommend. It was something to do. I’d say the last few tours I have done, the guides have just been very passionate and the energy infectious. So hence, why the low score for me. Didn’t quite land.
