A journey of approximately an hour brings us to the Khor Virap Monastery which is located in the broad Ararat plain, just 100 meters from the sealed Armenian-Turkish border, fortified with barbed wire fencing, under the protection of Russian military institutions.
We head southeast of Armenia, our initial halt is the mythical Monastery of the Spear, housed in Geghard Monastery. This UNESCO recognized cultural estate is delicately hewn into rock to store one of Christianity’s most venerated relics.
We then proceed towards Garni village, taking a break at a local family restaurant to enjoy our lunch while savouring lavash (a type of flatbread baked in a tandoor).
We then tour the Garni Temple, a Graeco-Roman pagan edifice from the first century A.D, potentially dedicated to Mithra. There’s a chance we might listen to Armenian visitors conducting an impromptu choir concert.
