Yerevan-Sevan- Sevanavank-Garni-Geghard-Yerevan
Monastery Sevanavank - Embark on a full-day excursion that seamlessly blends Armenia’s natural beauty, history, and spirituality. Depart from Yerevan and head north to the legendary Lake Sevan, often referred to as the “Pearl of Armenia.” Situated high in the mountains at approximately 1,900 meters above sea level, Sevan is one of the largest freshwater alpine lakes globally. The sparkling blue waters and cool breeze create an atmosphere of tranquility and wonder.
Ascend the steps to the Sevanavank Monastery, dramatically perched on a peninsula that was once an island. Founded in the 9th century by Princess Mariam, the monastery offers breathtaking panoramic views, making it an ideal spot for reflection and capturing unforgettable photos.
Garni Temple - The journey continues to the Temple of Garni, a striking example of ancient Armenian pagan architecture dedicated to the Sun God Mihr. Standing proudly above the Azat Gorge, the temple’s Greco-Roman columns and scenic mountain backdrop make it one of Armenia’s most photographed landmarks. Here, visitors can enjoy a short Duduk performance, filling the air with hauntingly beautiful Armenian melodies.
A short drive away lies the Geghard Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site partially carved into the surrounding cliffs. Dating back to the 4th century, this sacred complex is named after the “Holy Lance” that was once kept here — the spear said to have pierced Christ’s side. Visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy a mesmerizing choir performance inside its acoustically perfect stone chamber, where voices resonate like a divine echo.
Yerevan-Khor Virap- Etchmiadzin-Zvartnots-Yerevan
Khor Virap - Begin the journey from Yerevan and head south to Khor Virap, one of Armenia’s most iconic monasteries, set against the majestic backdrop of Mount Ararat. This historic site is renowned as the place where Saint Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned for 13 years before converting the Armenian king to Christianity, making Armenia the first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion. Explore the monastery grounds, its chapels, and take in the panoramic views of the Ararat plains.
Alex and Marie Manoogian Treasury House Museum - Next, travel to Etchmiadzin, the spiritual heart of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Here, visit the ancient Etchmiadzin Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and admire its beautiful architecture, sacred relics, and centuries-old icons. Don’t miss the Treasury Museum, which houses an impressive collection of religious artifacts, ancient manuscripts, ceremonial robes, and priceless treasures, offering a deeper insight into Armenia’s rich ecclesiastical heritage.
Zvartnots Temple - Continue a short distance to Zvartnots Cathedral, another UNESCO site and a masterpiece of 7th-century Armenian architecture. Known for its circular layout and intricate stone carvings, Zvartnots offers a glimpse into the innovative designs of medieval Armenian builders. Stroll through the ruins and imagine the grandeur of the cathedral in its original form.
Conclude the day with a scenic drive back to Yerevan, reflecting on Armenia’s rich cultural, spiritual, and architectural heritage—a journey that beautifully captures the soul of the nation.
