Garni Temple - The journey to Garni presents a delightful blend of Armenia’s natural beauty, history, and culture, featuring two iconic landmarks — the Arch of Charents and Garni Temple.
The Arch of Charents, constructed in 1957 by architect Raphael Israelyan, serves as a symbolic viewpoint dedicated to poet Yeghishe Charents. It frames a magnificent view of Mount Ararat above the Ararat Valley, with lines from Charents’ poetry inscribed on the arch. On clear days, the view is truly unforgettable.
Further along is Garni Temple, the only remaining pagan temple in Armenia. Built in the 1st century AD by King Trdat I and dedicated to the sun god Mihr, it merges Greco-Roman and Armenian styles. Situated above the Azat Gorge, it offers stunning views, while nearby ruins and a mosaic bathhouse enhance the experience.
The Monastery of Geghard - The journey continues to Geghard Monastery, a masterpiece of 13th-century Armenian architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Partly carved into the surrounding rock, the monastery was originally called Ayrivank, meaning “cave monastery.” Later it was renamed Geghard, after the sacred lance that pierced Jesus Christ, once kept here. The complex is rich in intricate carvings and khachkars, while its unique acoustics make it an exceptional place for spiritual singing.
The experience continues with a traditional lavash baking masterclass. Lavash, a soft and thin Armenian flatbread baked in a tonir oven, is an essential part of local cuisine. In 2014, lavash was included in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. During the masterclass, participants will learn ancient baking techniques and taste freshly made lavash with local cheese and herbs — a simple yet unforgettable experience.
Sevan - Lake Sevan, known as the “pearl” of Armenia, is one of the largest high-altitude freshwater lakes in the world, located at about 1900 meters above sea level. Surrounded by mountains rising over 3000 meters, the lake offers breathtaking landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and perfect conditions for relaxation.
On its peninsula stands Sevanavank Monastery, built in 874 by Princess Mariam, the daughter of King Ashot Bagratuni. Overlooking the vast blue waters, the monastery creates a striking contrast against the turquoise lake and sky, offering one of the most iconic and unforgettable views in Armenia.
Saturday: Yerevan-Khor Virap Monastery, Noravank Monastery, Tatev Monastery (return via Ropeway) - Yerevan
Khor Virap - Khor Virap Monastery is one of Armenia’s most significant pilgrimage sites, where Saint Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned before converting King Trdat III to Christianity. The monastery is renowned for its breathtaking views of Mount Ararat, making it one of the most iconic locations in the country. (Duration: 50–60 minutes)
Noravank Monastery, a 13th-century architectural masterpiece, is surrounded by dramatic red cliffs. The complex includes remarkable churches such as St. Karapet and St. Astvatsatsin, perfectly blending with the unique natural landscape. (Duration: 50–60 minutes)
Tatev Monastery - Tatev Monastery is one of Armenia’s most remarkable medieval complexes, once serving as a major religious, educational, and strategic center. Located on the edge of a deep gorge, it was protected by natural defenses and connected to the outside world through secret pathways. (Duration: 50–60 minutes)
The journey to the monastery is made unforgettable by the Wings of Tatev Ropeway, the world’s longest reversible cable car. Stretching 5.7 km over the breathtaking Vorotan Gorge, it connects Halidzor village to Tatev Monastery in just 11 minutes, offering spectacular panoramic views. (Duration: 12–15 minutes)
Matenadaran - The Museum of Ancient Manuscripts - Matenadaran museum - 5 euro per person
Then visit the Manuscript Museum of Armenia, known as Matenadaran; here, all ancient Armenian and World Manuscripts are preserved.
