- Yangon (Rangoon) - Begin the day by meeting a guide at a central location in Yangon, followed by a brief walk to the river to board the public ferry. The 10-minute journey on the Twante Canal offers a wonderful chance to observe daily life on the water, with plenty of photo opportunities. Expect to see small wooden boats with fishermen bringing in their catches, larger vessels carrying cargo to the city, and children playing in riverside villages. Upon arrival, choose between a private taxi or truck taxi to travel through the countryside to Twante, a town renowned for its pottery. Visit local artisans’ workshops to admire their crafts and see them using traditional tools and kilns. If interested, participate in a hands-on lesson in traditional pottery techniques. Then, enjoy a 20-minute uphill walk with the guide to Shwesandaw Pagoda, a 250-foot (76-meter) stupa believed to be 2,500 years old. Inside, find a 100-year-old Mandalay-style bronze Buddha statue along with several other Buddha statues. By now, you might be hungry, so visit a popular local restaurant known for its vegetarian dishes and enjoy a delicious lunch. Afterward, explore the local market with the guide, who provides insightful commentary about the area’s people and history. After wandering around town, return to the ferry for the journey back to Yangon. As the ferry cruises along the river, the guide highlights notable landmarks until reaching the Yangon dock, where the tour concludes.
