The monkeys descend from the steep cliffs and forests to relax in the warm waters of the onsen (hot springs) and return to the safety of the forests by evening.
- Zenkōji Temple - This temple is a branch of Shinshu-Zenkoji in Nagano and is dedicated to Amida (Zenkoji) Nyorai. There are approximately 400 temples housing Zenkoji Nyorai, but only about 100 are officially permitted to bear the name ‘Zenkoji’. Among these, only around 20 are officially recognized as branch temples by Shinshu-Zenkoji. In Gifu, Takayama Zenkoji is the sole temple of this kind. Similar to Shinshu-Zenkoji, it features Kaidan-meguri (a tour in the pitch-dark tunnel) in the basement of the main hall. This temple provides accommodations for visitors traveling from afar. With Takayama becoming a popular destination for international tourists, 95% of visitors are from abroad. In addition to private rooms, there is a shared kitchen available for guests to use at no cost.

We had a superb driver... - We had a superb driver with knowledge of the areas we drove through and explanations regarding the temple. The visit to the snow monkeys was wonderful and we would recommend you wear suitable clothing and footwear. Also having the time to visit the temple was amazing. It is a very long day and I would say that this is not a tour with a guide but a private taxi to visit these places.
