Xiangxi Hibiscus Town - At 9am, the guide and driver will greet you at the Zhangjiajie/Wulingyuan hotel lobby or Zhangjiajie airport/train station. They will then transfer you to Furong Ancient Town, which is a 1.5-hour drive via the highway. Originally known as Wangcun Village, Furong Ancient Town (or Hibiscus Ancient Town) gained its name after the famous movie “Hibiscus Town” was filmed there. The town is home to a diverse mix of people, primarily the Tujia and Miao ethnic groups, with Tujia people making up over 80% of the population.
Phoenix Ancient Town - Following the visit to Furong Old Town, the journey continues to Fenghuang Old Town, which is another 1.5-hour drive. The guide will assist with hotel check-in and guide you through Fenghuang Old Town. Unlike other ancient towns in China, Fenghuang is a peaceful and secluded town nestled by the river and surrounded by mountains. It’s delightful to wander through the town, explore unique shops and homes, and discover charming corners. The ethnic handicrafts in this area are particularly exquisite. At night, the town becomes even more serene, offering a perfect setting to relax in a bar and enjoy the sunset.
Tuojiang Ancient Street - Explore Fenghuang Old Town by following Tuojiang Ancient Streets, which are narrow alleys paved with flagstones and adorned with lanterns. These streets are lined with stalls offering souvenirs and snacks. You may encounter local elderly women in traditional attire selling handmade souvenirs along the roadside.
Phoenix Hong Bridge - Next, visit Hong Bridge, one of the many bridges in Fenghuang Old Town due to the Tuo River. Known as “Rainbow Bridge” in English, it was built during the Ming Dynasty. According to local legend, the bridge was constructed to “cut off the Dragon’s head” when the emperor learned that a future emperor might be born here. As you walk across the bridge, you’ll find several souvenir and craft shops on the first floor, while the second floor features a tea shop and an exhibition of calligraphy and art.
Phoenix East Gate Scenic Area - Afterwards, proceed to the East Gate area. As one of the four gates in Fenghuang Ancient Town, the East Gate Tower is situated near the Tuo River. Built in 1715 during Emperor Kangxi’s reign in the Qing Dynasty, it was initially named “Shengheng Gate.” The East Gate Tower is a two-story structure with a base made of red sandstone and an upper part constructed with ancient red bricks. The tower’s frame combines the “beam supporting structure” and the “through type timber frame.”
Fenghuang–Fanjing Mountain–Zhangjiajie. The tour ends.
Fenghuang County - At 8:00am, the guide and driver will meet you at the Fenghuang hotel lobby and transfer you to Tongren Fanjing Mountain, a 2-hour drive each way, 123KM from Fenghuang.
Mount Fanjing - Enjoy a full day exploring the remarkable Fanjingshan. You’ll take the South Route to ascend the mountain, starting with a park bus ride from the tourist center to Yu’ao Station, followed by a cable car ride to the mountain top area, allowing more time to explore the highlights.
What to see at Fanjingshan: Located in Tongren, Guizhou province (southwest China), Fanjingshan is the highest peak of the Wuling Mountains, standing at 2,570m (8,430ft) above sea level. Besides being a sacred Maitreya mountain for Buddhists, Fanjingshan National Nature Reserve is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and was declared a World Heritage Site in 2018.
Red Cloud Golden Summit, a thumb-like peak, is described by UNESCO as an “island of metamorphic rock in a sea of karst,” believed to have formed between 2 million and 65 million years ago. Visitors are drawn to Fanjingshan for its breathtaking summit views.
Mushroom Stone, the landmark of Fanjingshan, is shaped like a mushroom with a large top and small base. It has stood for over a billion years, enduring rainstorms, summer heat, and winter snow, embodying the Buddhist principle of “remaining unbiased” in all circumstances.
Old Golden Summit, at an elevation of 2,494 meters, is the highest scenic site of Fanjingshan. At its peak is a temple dedicated to Buddha Dipamkara, offering the best spot for panoramic photos of Fanjingshan.
Cheng En Temple, located between the two summits with scarlet walls and black tiles, is the main building of the Fanjingshan Temple Group and one of the four Royal temples in Fanjingshan, built during the Ming Dynasty (1368AD-1644AD).
