It offers visitors a glimpse into historical Xi’an and showcases the ingenuity of ancient Chinese workers. Cycling atop this complete wall is a highlight for many visitors, providing a panoramic view of both the past and present Xi’an City.
- Big Wild Goose Pagoda (Dayanta) - Located in Daci’en Temple, which was the religious center of Chang’an during the Grand Tang Dynasty, this pagoda was once the tallest building in the city. Only the most capable candidates who passed the imperial examination were allowed to ascend from inside to the top, symbolizing the special honor bestowed by the imperial court and their promising future. Today, it is a popular destination as parents from across the country come to pray before the Buddha, hoping their children will excel academically. The pagoda was initially built to house Buddhist scriptures brought back from India by Master Xuanzang, who traveled for 17 years from 629 AD to 645 AD in search of the original teachings of Buddha. He was a remarkable traveler and translator who greatly contributed to cultural exchanges between China and India in ancient times. The area surrounding the Big Wild Goose Pagoda is also the most beautiful part of the city, with many buildings constructed in ancient style. A visit to this place and a stroll in the area will immerse you in Buddhist culture and reveal the blend of antiquity and modernity in the city.
- Xi’an Bell Tower - As landmarks of Xi’an, the Bell Tower and Drum Tower have stood in the city center for over 600 years. They were historically used for timekeeping and now serve as spectacular skyline features in the city’s center. With painted beams and intricate wooden structures, they are the largest Bell and Drum Towers of their kind in China. The twin towers have witnessed the city’s highs and lows and the significant changes over the last 30 years. Both towers are illuminated at night, offering a special ambiance that transports people back to the remote and splendid Xi’an of antiquity.
- Muslim Quarter - Situated in the city center of Xi’an, the Muslim Quarter is the only historical and cultural area that has survived through the ages. It is not only the most vibrant but also the most colorful area, filled with street foods and restaurants. The various sounds of hawking vendors and buzzing scooters, along with the hustle and bustle of visitors, create an authentic Chinese atmosphere. Sampling street food and bargaining with vendors provide a delightful break in your day.
- Xi’an Mosque - Xi’an Great Mosque is one of the oldest and best-preserved mosques in China. It was first built in 742 AD during the Tang Dynasty, shortly after Islam was introduced to China via the Silk Road. Located in a bustling area with narrow lanes and bazaars among modest buildings, it features a beautiful blend of Chinese architectural style and Islamic culture. It is a main religious site for Chinese Muslims in the surrounding communities and a worthwhile place to visit.

Xi’an - Lunch:
Stop at a “Shredded Pita Bread Cooked in Lamb Soup” restaurant.
If there is one dish that represents Xi’an, it is undoubtedly Yangrou Paomo—an aromatic, flavorful, and spicy bowl of shredded flatbread soaked in mutton broth. As a local specialty widely enjoyed in the Xi’an area, locals often say, “If you have never tried Pao Mo, you cannot claim to have been to Xi’an.” Eating Pao Mo is a uniquely enjoyable and relaxing experience. Here is the proper way to do it. Initially, you will be served two pieces of unleavened flat pita bread or “mo” in Chinese in a bowl. Then, it is your task to break the bread into pieces ranging from peanut to soybean size, according to your preference. Although time-consuming, locals believe that Paomo made by oneself tastes much better. More importantly, it is a time for people to converse and connect while sitting together and tearing the hard bread. Afterward, you should return the bowl with the shredded bread pieces, and your “mo” will be cooked in mutton soup that has been stewed all day until the bits are fully soaked in the soup’s rich flavor. The stew is cooked with mung bean vermicelli and topped with slices of lamb or beef of your choice, with pickled sweet garlic served alongside. Adding chili sauce achieves the perfect balance for the dish.
