Chasing Sunsets and Sea Turtles: A Curacao Beach Adventure
When the call of the ocean beckoned, I couldn’t resist the allure of Curacao’s beaches. Join me as I recount a day of snorkeling, sea turtles, and sunsets on this unforgettable island adventure.
Setting Sail on a Curacao Adventure
The sun was high in the sky as I set out on a new adventure, eager to explore the vibrant beaches of Curacao. With my partner by my side, we joined a small group led by our charismatic guide, Sihen. His enthusiasm was infectious, and he promised us a day filled with sun, sea, and unforgettable experiences. As a former professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours in the ocean, but the allure of discovering new underwater worlds never fades.
Our journey began with a drive to the far end of the island, where we were greeted by the sight of towering wind turbines. Their blades sliced through the air with a rhythmic grace, a stark contrast to the wild beauty of the surrounding landscape. Though we had to skip the Shete Boka National Park due to time constraints, the anticipation of what lay ahead kept our spirits high.
Snorkeling and Surprises
Our next stop was meant to be the famed Blue Room Cave, but the tides had other plans. High tide made it unsafe to enter, so Sihen quickly adapted our itinerary. Instead, we found ourselves at a secluded reef, ready to dive into the crystalline waters. As I slipped beneath the surface, the world transformed into a kaleidoscope of colors. Schools of fish darted around us, their scales shimmering in the sunlight. It was a reminder of why I fell in love with the ocean in the first place.
On our way back to the dock, we encountered an unexpected twist—a routine check by the Coast Guard. Though the language barrier added a touch of uncertainty, Sihen’s calm demeanor reassured us. Once cleared, we continued our journey to Playa Forti, where a delightful lunch awaited us. The seafood was fresh, the drinks were cold, and the view from the cliffside restaurant was nothing short of spectacular.
Turtles and Twilight
As the day began to wind down, we made our way to Playa Piskado, also known as Turtle Beach. The sun was beginning its descent, casting a golden glow over the water. I wasn’t sure if we’d be lucky enough to spot any turtles, but fortune favored us. Three majestic sea turtles glided gracefully through the water, and I couldn’t resist joining them for a swim. It was a moment of pure magic, one that I’ll carry with me long after the sun has set.
We lingered at Playa Piskado to watch the sunset, the sky ablaze with hues of orange and pink. As the last light faded, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the day’s adventures. Curacao had once again proven to be a treasure trove of natural beauty and unexpected delights. With Sihen’s expert guidance, we had navigated the island’s wonders, creating memories that would last a lifetime. Until the next wave calls, I’ll be dreaming of the turquoise waters and the gentle sway of the Caribbean breeze.
