Flamingos and Pigs: A Colorful Start

The day began with a warm reception as we boarded the vibrant “Ami school bus,” a windowless wonder that allowed the Caribbean breeze to flow freely. Our first stop was the Flamingo Sanctuary Sint Willibrordus, where the flamingos were more than just a pink blur in the distance. Unlike my previous encounter in Bonaire, these flamingos were close enough to admire their elegant stance and vibrant plumage. It was a delightful start to the day, setting the tone for the adventures ahead.

Next, we made our way to Porto Marie, a beach that felt like a scene from a postcard. Known locally as the DSDS beach, it was a serene spot where Willy and Woody, the resident pigs, greeted us with their charming antics. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly snorkeling with the sea turtles at Playa Piskado. Swimming alongside these gentle creatures was a surreal experience, one that words can hardly capture. Patrick, our guide, joined us in the water with his GoPro, capturing memories that will last a lifetime. Meanwhile, Sevi ensured our belongings were safe on the beach, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the moment.

After the exhilarating swim, we indulged in homemade rum punch and banana cake, a delightful treat that perfectly complemented the day’s adventures. Our final stop was the Blue Curaçao liqueur factory, where we learned about the distillation process and sampled the iconic liqueur. It was a fitting end to a day filled with discovery and delight.
