With more than 30 rooms open to the public, guests can delve into the history dating back to the 16th century when Grace O’Malley, the Pirate Queen of Connacht, presided over the land and seas surrounding the estate. The construction of the initial Westport House in 1650, by Colonel John Browne and his wife Maud Burke, was based on one of her many castles - the remnants of which may still be explored in the dungeons today. Grace O’Malley was the great-great-grandmother of Maud Burke.
Subsequent years saw multiple enhancements directed by renowned architects Richard Cassels, James Wyatt, and Thomas Ivory. The estate evolved from a more modest dwelling featuring a single-depth room and an open courtyard into the grand, square structure - adorned with exquisite balustraded terraces - familiar to us today.
