A Journey Through Time and Nature

As a museum curator with a passion for history and culture, I often find myself drawn to places where the past and present intertwine seamlessly. The Great Western Greenway in Westport, Ireland, offered just such an experience. This former railway line, now a scenic cycling path, promised a journey through some of the most bucolic and romantic landscapes imaginable. With my family in tow, we set out to explore this award-winning cycle track, eager to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty and historical charm of the region.

Our adventure began in the charming town of Westport, where we rented e-bikes from Paddy & Nelly’s Bike Hire. The owner, Paul, was incredibly helpful, ensuring we were well-equipped for the journey ahead. As we pedaled away from the town center, the scenery quickly transformed into a tapestry of rolling green hills, dotted with sheep and the occasional cow. The simplicity of the farm cottages and the remnants of old stone structures along the way transported us to a bygone era, offering countless opportunities for photo ops and moments of reflection.

A Culinary Delight in Newport

About halfway through our ride, we arrived in the quaint town of Newport, where we decided to take a break and refuel. We stumbled upon Kelly’s, a delightful restaurant that offered both indoor and outdoor seating. Despite the rainy and cold weather, the warmth of the establishment and the delicious aroma of freshly prepared food beckoned us inside. I opted for a veggie and chicken wrap, paired with an amazing cup of coffee with oat milk. The meal was perfect, providing the energy we needed to continue our journey.

As we dined, we couldn’t help but admire the charming ambiance of the restaurant, which seemed to mirror the pastoral beauty of the surrounding landscape. The friendly locals and fellow cyclists we encountered added to the sense of community and camaraderie that permeated the town. It was a reminder of the simple pleasures that travel can bring, and the importance of taking the time to savor each moment.

Embracing the Elements and the Landscape

Continuing our ride towards Mulranny, we were met with a breathtaking panorama of the hillside descending towards the water. Despite the rain and cold, the scenery was beyond our expectations, with heather, wild geranium, ferns, and rhododendron lining the trail. Moss-covered stones and babbling brooks added to the enchanting atmosphere, evoking a sense of nostalgia for simpler times.

Throughout the journey, I found myself feeling grateful to the farmers who maintain this beautiful land, ensuring it remains clean and natural for all to enjoy.
