Discover the world’s tallest active geyser, vibrant hot springs, and microscopic life in one of Earth’s most extreme environments.
• Gibbon Falls - Gibbon Falls cascades 84 feet (0.3 m) over a remnant of the Yellowstone caldera rim, formed by a massive volcanic eruption around 640,000 years ago. This quick stop on the lower loop drive is perfect for a photo opportunity.
• Old Faithful - Situated in Yellowstone’s Upper Geyser Basin in the park’s southwest, Old Faithful offers the most accessible and visitor-friendly geyser-viewing area, complete with bench seating, a large parking lot, and a ranger station that tracks eruption details to predict the next one.
• Fountain Paint Pot - The Fountain Paint Pot Trail showcases various hydrothermal features of Yellowstone’s active volcano. These features are categorized into those with abundant water (hot springs and geysers) and those with limited water (mudpots and fumaroles). Despite structural similarities, each feature is unique.
• Grand Prismatic Spring - Located in the Midway Geyser Basin, Grand Prismatic Spring is the park’s largest hot spring, measuring about 370 feet (112.8 m) in diameter and over 121 feet (37 m) deep. Described by fur trapper Osborne Russell in 1839, it is the earliest identifiable thermal feature in Yellowstone.
• Yellowstone Lake - At 7,733 feet (2,357 m) above sea level, Yellowstone Lake is North America’s largest high-elevation lake (above 7,000 feet / 2,134 m). It spans roughly 20 miles (32.2 km) long and 14 miles (22.5 km) wide, with 141 miles (227 km) of shoreline and a surface area of 132 square miles (342 km2). The lake freezes completely each winter, with ice thickness ranging from a few inches to over two feet, and typically thaws in late May or early June. The average water temperature is 41°F (5°C), making swimming inadvisable, as survival time is estimated at only 20 to 30 minutes.
• Yellowstone Geysers - Mud Volcano Area - Yellowstone is a volcano, with one of its most spectacular eruptions occurring 640,000 years ago, forming the Yellowstone Caldera. This caldera filled with lava flows over millennia, creating the volcanic plateau that forms much of the park’s center. At Mud Volcano, visitors are near a resurgent dome, with the hills to the east forming Sour Creek Dome. These domes are areas of active ground deformation, monitored closely by scientists for volcanic activity. Many of the park’s geysers, hot springs, mudpots, and fumaroles are located near or within the caldera.
• Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone - The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River showcases the park’s complex geologic history with its dramatic colors and shapes. Steam puffs indicate hydrothermal features in the canyon walls, while the Upper and Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River enhance the grandeur of this natural wonder.
• Hayden Valley - Hayden Valley is a vast, sub-alpine valley in Yellowstone National Park, straddling the Yellowstone River between Yellowstone Falls and Yellowstone Lake. The valley floor is an ancient lake bed from when Yellowstone Lake was much larger.
• Firehole Canyon Drive - Firehole Canyon Drive is a 2-mile, one-way road off the Grand Loop south of Madison, featuring a waterfall overlook and swimming area.
