The Baring Head Lighthouse Walk is an essential destination for those captivated by Wellington’s history and natural splendor. This 6km round-trip journey begins at the Wainuiomata car park, offering breathtaking views of the Cook Strait and the distant Kaikoura Ranges. Along the path, visitors can discover WWII-era bunkers and admire unique geological formations. The lighthouse is a notable historical and operational landmark, standing 12.2 meters tall and featuring a solar-powered LED beacon. The area is part of a conservation initiative, with ongoing restoration efforts including the refurbishment of the lighthouse keepers’ cottages and plans to convert the old powerhouse into a visitor center. New trails are also being developed to showcase the site’s rich history and ecological significance.
