- Oriental Bay - Wellington’s most popular beach was initially constructed using ship ballast sand from England and further enhanced by the Wellington City Council with golden sand from Golden Bay. Originally named Duppa after its sole resident, Mr. Duppa, it was renamed Oriental Bay after the ship “The Oriental” arrived in Wellington in 1840. The area was initially farmland and served as a quarantine site with a nurse and tent on the beach, and was used by whalers, resulting in a strong odor from boiled whale blubber. Settlement began in the 1880s, with public amenities like “Te Aro Baths” and “The Band Rotunda” added in the early 1900s.

The Red Rocks Scientific Reserve was established in 1972 due to public concern about quarrying. On Sundays, the gate is closed, and the route is open only to walkers and mountain bikers.
