Discovering Weligama’s Surfing Soul

Weligama, a charming coastal town in Sri Lanka, had been on my radar for quite some time. Known for its laid-back vibe and consistent waves, it seemed like the perfect spot to explore a new surfing culture. As someone who’s spent years chasing waves across Central America, I was eager to see what this part of the world had to offer. The moment I arrived, I was greeted by the warm sun, the sound of the ocean, and the friendly faces of fellow surfers. It felt like home.

I decided to join the Ride a Wave Surf School to immerse myself in the local surf scene. The school promised a unique flavor of surfing that went beyond just riding waves. It was about connecting with the ocean, embracing nature, and experiencing the true essence of the sport. I was intrigued and ready to dive in.

Riding the Waves with Shan

My instructor, Shan, was a local legend. His passion for surfing was infectious, and his knowledge of the ocean was unparalleled. From the moment we met, I knew I was in good hands. By the end of my time in Weligama, I was riding bigger waves than I ever imagined. Shan’s guidance was invaluable, and his ability to capture photos and videos of my progress added an extra layer of excitement. Analyzing my rides with Shan was a game-changer, allowing me to see my mistakes and celebrate my successes.

Embracing the Surfing Community
