Highlights
  • The National Council of Negro Women - The Headquarters of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) is a historic building located in Washington D.C., United States. The NCNW was founded in 1935 by Mary McLeod Bethune, an educator and civil rights leader, to promote the rights and welfare of African American women and their families. The organization has been headquartered in the same building since 1953 and it has been designated as a National Historic Landmark.

The building is located at 633 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, in the heart of the nation’s capital, just a few blocks from the White House. The building was originally constructed in the late 19th century as a commercial office building. In 1942, the building was purchased by the National Council of Negro Women with the help of a loan from the Federal Housing Administration.

Amazing Tour - This tour took you more places in one day than you can yourself. The Fredrick Douglas stop was amazing. I highly recommend this tour with no reservations

Clevelanders Enjoyed The Ride - The tour was made memorable because of the expertise of the guide, Mr. Kenneth. Not only was he knowledgeable, he was personable as well. He gave us an Afrocentric view of Washington DC. Thank you Ken. These two Clevelanders are grateful for the educational and inspirational experience!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Washington DC is truly a city of monuments, and the seat of our federal government. - Mr. Kenny Burns himself was our tour guide. He showed us all the various African American around DC, and it was excellent. Mr. Burns was extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. My spouse and I topped off the tour with a tour of the African American History Museum. I so thoroughly enjoyed myself that I will return to DC in order to finish my tour of the museum, as we had completed only half of the facility. It was that educational and enjoyable.

Great tour and guide - Kenny was an enjoyable, funny, sports fiend and very knowledgeable of history especially of African/American history, also history of Washington DC. He took us on adventure into local neighborhoods and to memorials only someone with local history would know. Thanks Kenny for the great tour. Tim and Lois.

Amazing experience - Amazing experience and lots of insights into African American History. The experience at the museum was great too. Only wished we got something to eat before embarking on the tour.

Lots of history - On this tour we had a great tour operator who was very knowledgeable and funny. The tour bus was very comfortable and each stop was long enough to take pictures, etc. it was self guided in a sense because the tour operator dropped us off at each stop and we came back to the bus at the allocated time. My favorite stop was Frederick Douglas home but we had to walk up and down 82 stairs to get to the property (if you had mobility issues you they would drive you up). The last stop was the African American Museum of Natural History (ticket was provided by the tour operator). We enjoyed the museum but it was so crowded and we were already so tired so I believe we saw everything but not 100% sure.

Window into American history - The tour does not include a tour of the museum, if that is what you are looking for. The museum doesn’t really have tours, for some reason. This tour is good, although the first tour hours you see the same sites you would with any Dc tour, except there is a story or two from the AA perspective. The last hour you go through neighborhoods, which to me were much more interesting. I think this part could be expanded.

Avoid - I would NOT recommend this company be included in your travel plans. My tour was cancelled after I arrived at the meeting point. Viator and the organizer, KB Tours, informed me that there were too few people signed up for the tour. KB called and badgered me saying notice had been sent to me in an email and called a day and a half before the tour was to take place. Since I was traveling, I didn't get that message but called Viator on Sunday night to confirm the tour, was told it would be taking place, and sent my ticket for the tour by email. My plans were for three days in Washington with one designed for this tour. What a disappointment. Watch out for this company. They cancel at the last minute and can ruin your vacation.
