Monastery (Al Dayr) - Curious about exploring the less-traveled paths of Petra? Interested in a glimpse of the hidden trails? This adventure, guided by a local expert, starts at the Petra visitors center. It includes a 20-minute drive to the back entrance near Al Bayda. From there, the journey continues with a walk and hike to the Monastery. Surrounded by wild landscapes and panoramic mountain views, it feels like having Petra all to oneself. Upon reaching the Monastery, numerous Nabatean caves, tombs, and carvings await exploration. Climbing above ground level offers breathtaking views and a chance to capture stunning photos at the iconic cave door opposite the Monastery.
-
Qasr al-Bint - After exploring the Monastery and its surroundings, the tour descends to enjoy a buffet lunch at the Basin restaurant or a quick bite elsewhere. Following lunch, the tour proceeds to Qasr al-Bint, offering views of the colonnaded street and the great temple.
-
The Colonnaded Street - This street is an original Nabataean creation, later renovated during Roman times. It was one of the main shopping streets in ancient Petra, rebuilt in 106 BC with a width of 6 meters.
-
The Royal Tombs - Towering above Petra’s center, the “Royal Tombs” are a magnificent collection of grand mausoleums carved into the western face of the Jabal al-Khubtha rock massif, showcasing stunning facades that highlight ancient craftsmanship.
-
Nabatean Theatre - Next, the tour visits the theater carved into the mountain at the base of the High Place of Sacrifice. The theater features three rows of seats separated by passageways, with seven stairways ascending the auditorium, accommodating 4,000 spectators. It was carved during King Aretas IV’s reign (4 BC-AD 27), and the Romans later rebuilt the stage back wall.
-
Al-Khazneh - The final stop (where the tour concludes before exiting through the main Siq) is the Treasury, or Al Khazna. Standing nearly 40 meters high, it is intricately adorned with Corinthian capitals, friezes, figures, and more. The Treasury is topped by a funerary urn, which local legend claims hides a pharaoh’s treasure. Although its original purpose remains a mystery, it was likely constructed in the 1st century BC, with the urn serving as a royal memorial. The Treasury has two floors, measuring 25.30 meters in width and 39.1 meters in height. Here, the tour bids farewell, hoping this journey through history, nature, and wonder remains with visitors forever.
-
Siq - After enjoying the Treasury, the day concludes with a walk to the visitor center through The Siq, the main road leading to the city. It starts from the Dam and ends at the Treasury, measuring 160 meters in length, 3 to 12 meters in width, and reaching up to 80 meters in height. The main part of the Siq is a natural rock formation, with the rest carved by the Nabataeans.
