- Lake Vouliagmeni - Nestled in the heart of the Athenian Riviera, Lake Vouliagmeni is a hidden gem of Attica’s natural beauty. This picturesque setting, a rare geological marvel of global significance, invites exploration. The lake’s brackish waters, continuously refreshed by both the sea and underground thermal springs, offer a unique and natural thermal spa experience. The majestic rock formations, thermal waters, intricate underwater tunnels, and lush greenery create a one-of-a-kind geological phenomenon. The lake’s current form resulted from the collapse of a cave roof, eroded by the high temperatures of the water flowing within. It is listed in the National Catalog NATURA 2000 and recognized as a Place of Special Natural Beauty by the Ministry of Culture.
Where the renowned lake concludes, a complex underwater cave begins, explored to a length of 3,123 meters, with its end yet to be discovered.
- Temple of Poseidon - Sounio is the name of the cape located at the southernmost tip of the Attica prefecture.
Its beaches are rocky and steep, rising almost vertically from the sea to a great height, forming a small cove to the west, separated by an isthmus from another eastern cove. Sounio is renowned for its significant geographical location and the ruins of the ancient Temple of Poseidon found there. The first written mention of Sounio is by Homer, who referred to it as the “Sounion sanctuary” in the Odyssey, noting that Menelaus, on his return from Troy, stopped to bury his ship’s captain, Frontis. Sophocles, Euripides, Pausanias, and Vitruvius also mention it. In recent years, the broader area has been declared a national park due to its environmental significance.
The Doric temple visible today was constructed from local Agrileza marble on the ruins of the archaic temple. Its gabled roof was adorned with decorative capes.
