- Corticarte - Cork Art - Experience a visit to a traditional cork factory to discover the entire process, from understanding the cork oak tree, its extraction, selection, and preparation to the final product. Did you know that the bark of the Cork Oak grows annually and must be harvested every nine years, reaching a thickness of 25 centimeters? This makes it the perfect material, resistant to heat, cold, and fire. After the cork is removed, the tree regenerates. Portugal is responsible for 55% of the world’s cork production, which is highly valued today for decorative wall and floor coverings, as well as in the production of sporting goods, such as baseball grains or fishing rod handles.
In many countries, cork is best known as the raw material for wine corks, allowing micro-portions of oxygen to interact with the wine, enabling it to “age” while maintaining its quality. As you can see, our Évora Tour offers a wealth of knowledge.
- Historic Center of Évora - The Historic Center of Évora is an urban area within the city walls, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986.
The city-museum of Évora has roots dating back to the Roman Empire. It retains traces of various civilizations and cultures, including Celts, Romans, Arabs, Jews, and Christians, all of which have influenced Évora’s culture. It reached its peak in the 15th century when it became the residence of the Portuguese kings. The architectural and artistic quality of the white houses, adorned with tiles and wrought iron balconies from the 16th to 18th centuries, is unique. The city’s monuments have also significantly influenced Portuguese architecture in Brazil.
The Historic Center of Évora, characterized by narrow streets, lanes, patios, and open spaces, covers an area of 107 hectares and is clearly defined by medieval walls extending over 3 km.

Água de Prata Aqueduct - The Água de Prata Aqueduct, also known as Aqueduto da Água da Prata or Aqueduto da Prata, is a complex piece of Renaissance hydraulic engineering designed to supply Évora with water. Inaugurated in 1537, it was constructed during the reign of King João III and designed by the royal architect Francisco de Arruda. The aqueduct transports water from springs located in Graça do Divor, within the São Bento de Castris Convent grounds, which “originate at Herdade das Figueiras de Lobo,” to Évora, spanning approximately 18 km.
-
Chapel of Bones - This eerie chapel, with walls and pillars lined with human bones and skulls, is estimated to contain the remains of over 5,000 monks. Do not be alarmed by the entrance sign that reads, “We bones here, for yours await,” as it invites reflection on life.
-
Church of São Francisco - The Church of São Francisco in Évora is a Gothic-Manueline architectural marvel. Built between 1480 and 1510 by master stonemasons Martim Lourenço and Pero de Trilho and decorated by royal painters Francisco Henriques, Jorge Afonso, and Garcia Fernandes, it is closely linked to the historical events of Portugal’s maritime expansion. This is evident in the symbols of the monumental nave with its ogival vault: the cross of the Order of Christ and the emblems of the founding kings, D. João II and D. Manuel I.
-
Praça do Giraldo - In Évora, all roads lead to Praça do Giraldo. This has been the case since its construction in 1571/1573.
Praça do Giraldo is a tribute to Geraldo Geraldes, “Sem Pavor,” who conquered Évora from the Moors in 1167. In gratitude for this significant achievement, D. Afonso Henriques appointed him mayor of the city and frontier of the Alentejo, a region he helped conquer.
-
Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça - The Church of Graça, or Convent of Nossa Senhora da Graça, is a significant Renaissance religious monument in Évora, located in Largo da Graça, in the parish of Sé and São Pedro. This monastery, belonging to the hermit monks of Saint Augustine, was founded in 1511 and designed by the architect of the Casa Real, Miguel de Arruda. The building is a beautiful example of pure Renaissance style, featuring the famous Atlantean figures, known locally as the “Meninos da Graça,” on the façade’s acroteria.
-
Roman Temple of Évora (Temple of Diana) - Another monument of great significance is the Temple of Diana, or Temple of Évora, highlighting the importance the Romans placed on this beautiful city. Located next to the Cathedral, it was built during the Roman period. From here, one can see the magnificent “Water of the Silver” aqueduct, outside the city walls and extending from the city’s outskirts, with some arches still visible within the city, constructed in the 16th century to ensure water transportation.
-
Cathedral of Évora (Sé Catedral de Évora) - Now, let’s explore the cathedral. To reach it, simply walk up Rua 5 de Outubro, one of the best streets for purchasing Alentejo handicrafts. The Cathedral of Évora, whose construction began in 1186 and was consecrated in 1204, was completed in 1250. It is a fascinating and imposing monument. Built entirely of granite, it marks the transition from Romanesque to Gothic style.
Two medieval towers can be seen on each side of the Cathedral of Évora’s façade. The tower on the south side is the bell tower, whose bells chime the city’s time. On each side of its portal are spectacular 14th-century Apostle sculptures by Mestre Pêro.
Outside the Évora Cathedral, the dome is the most spectacular architectural element. The lantern tower of the cruise of the ships, from the reign of D. Dinis, crowned by a stone scales needle, is indeed the emblem of this monument.
- Diana’s Garden - Diana’s Garden in Évora is situated right in the heart of the city’s cultural center. Extending from a square called Largo do Conde de Villa Flor, and in perfect harmony with the Roman Temple, Diana’s Garden is the ideal place to begin or end a sightseeing tour of this beautiful city of Évora.
