A neighborhood in Vilnius situated ‘beyond the river’, Uzupis has historical references dating back to the 16th century. The term ‘beyond the river’ has been associated with Užupis ever since (which is what it literally translates to in Lithuanian). Encircled by the Vilnia river, the area was once famed for its robust watermill, and the local populace traditionally engaged in various crafts and industries such as leatherworking, paper manufacturing, and the brewing of beer and spirits, marking it as the initial hub of industry. Hence, it was never known for being trendy or opulent. However, that perception started to shift in 1997 when a group of bohemian spirits came together to proclaim this neglected quarter an autonomous republic.
