Family Adventures in Portugal: A Two-Day Journey Through Porto, Aveiro, Nazaré, and Óbidos

Join me as I embark on a two-day family adventure through Porto, Aveiro, Nazaré, and Óbidos, exploring the rich history and stunning landscapes of Portugal. Discover how this journey became a memorable experience for my children and me.

Discovering Porto’s Hidden Gems

Our journey began in the vibrant city of Porto, a place that has long been on my travel bucket list. As a family, we were eager to explore the city’s rich history and stunning architecture. Our first stop was the iconic Torre dos Clérigos, a towering masterpiece of late-baroque style. The kids were fascinated by the intricate details and the panoramic views from the top were simply breathtaking. It was a perfect way to introduce them to the beauty of Portuguese architecture.

Next, we wandered into the enchanting Livraria Lello, often hailed as the most beautiful bookstore in Europe. The kids were wide-eyed with wonder as they explored the magical interior, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia as I watched them. It was a reminder of the importance of nurturing a love for books and stories in our children.

We also visited the Capela das Almas, with its stunning facade adorned with thousands of blue and white tiles. The kids enjoyed counting the tiles and learning about the history behind this remarkable building. Our day in Porto was filled with awe and inspiration, and it set the tone for the rest of our adventure.

A Day in Aveiro and Nazaré

The next day, we set off for Aveiro, often referred to as the “Venice of Portugal.” The kids were thrilled to ride the traditional “moliceiros” boats along the canals, and we all marveled at the colorful houses lining the waterways. It was a delightful experience that offered a unique perspective of this charming city.

We couldn’t resist trying the famous “soft eggs” dessert, a sweet treat that quickly became a family favorite. The kids loved the rich, creamy texture, and it was a delicious way to immerse ourselves in the local culture.

Our journey continued to Nazaré, a coastal town known for its giant waves. While the kids were too young to surf, they were captivated by the sight of the massive waves crashing against the shore. We spent the afternoon building sandcastles and flying kites, enjoying the fresh sea breeze and the stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Exploring the Medieval Charm of Óbidos

Our final stop was the enchanting town of Óbidos, a place that felt like stepping back in time. The kids were excited to explore the well-preserved castle and the maze of cobblestone streets. We wandered through the town, admiring the flowered windows and the charming white houses.

One of the highlights was tasting the local “ginjinha,” a cherry liqueur served in edible chocolate cups. While the kids enjoyed their chocolate treats, I savored the rich flavors of this traditional drink.

As we made our way back to Lisbon, I reflected on the incredible experiences we had shared as a family. This two-day excursion was not only a journey through some of Portugal’s most beautiful regions but also an opportunity to create lasting memories with my children. I highly recommend this two-day adventure for families looking to explore the rich history and culture of Portugal in a fun and engaging way.
