Believed to have been initially established in the 3rd century AD, the stupa has been reconstructed multiple times, most recently in the 1930s, due to foreign invasions. It is widely considered the most significant national monument in Laos and serves as a national emblem.
- Patuxay Monument - The term Patuxai combines ‘Patu’, meaning door or gateway, and ‘Xai’, meaning victory, thus translating to “Victory Gate”. The Patuxai was constructed during a tumultuous period in Lao history when Laos was a constitutional monarchy. Originally called “Anousavali” (“Monument”), it was dedicated to the memory of Laotian soldiers who perished during World War II and the 1949 independence war from France.
- Wat Si Saket - Wat Si Saket was commissioned in 1818 by King Anouvong (Sethathirath V.). The name Si is derived from the Sanskrit honorific Sri, prefixed to Wat Saket in Bangkok, renamed by Anouvong’s contemporary, King Rama I. Built in the Siamese style of Buddhist architecture, with a surrounding terrace and an elaborate five-tiered roof, it may have been spared during the 1827 sacking of Vientiane by Siamese forces, who used it as their headquarters. It is possibly the oldest surviving temple in Vientiane. The French colonial government restored Wat Si Saket in 1924 and again in 1930. The temple features a cloister wall with over 2,000 ceramic and silver Buddha images and also houses a museum.
