- Imperial Carriage Museum Vienna - Located near Schönbrunn Palace, the Imperial Carriage Museum Vienna offers a fascinating journey through Austria’s history. Visitors can admire the carriages of notable figures like Maria Theresia, Napoleon, and Franz Joseph, and explore their intriguing lives. The centerpiece is the baroque Imperial Coach, complemented by elegant state carriages, luxurious traveling coaches, and delightful children’s carriages of Habsburg royalty.
The Sisi Trail in the Carriage Museum invites visitors to trace the life of Empress Elisabeth from her wedding to her untimely demise. Since 2008, the Sisi Trail has been a feature in the museum’s main gallery, showcasing her life through her carriages and rare original artifacts.
Exhibits include the coach she used as an imperial bride, her children’s charming carriages, the golden Imperial Coach from her coronation as Queen of Hungary, the carriage she exited moments before her assassination in Geneva, and the striking black hearse that carried her to her final resting place.
These carriages are displayed alongside portraits, paintings, and unique items that belonged to Sisi. Among them is the iconic black robe with an endless train, designed by Fanny Scheiner around 1885, which highlights the empress’s celebrated slender figure. Also on display is the only surviving saddle used by the empress, renowned as the finest horsewoman of her era, and her recreated “riding chapel” featuring portraits of her beloved horses.
