How can one describe Vienna, the cultural capital? Is it the birthplace of the waltz or psychoanalysis? Indeed, all these attributes and more define Austria’s capital.
The Genius Loci, or spirit of place, is rich with details, especially evident at Belvedere. Interested in exploring how artworks from various eras reflect Austrian and Viennese identity? A tour of the Belvedere offers insights into the diverse aspects of the national character.
Gustav Klimt’s golden pieces, “Judith” and “The Kiss,” reveal why female sexuality captivated medical interest in Vienna. The unsettling atmosphere in Egon Schiele’s “Embrace” and “The Girl and Death” also sheds light on why this city became the cradle of psychoanalysis.
The palace’s elaborate baroque decor and emphasis on ancient heroic themes illustrate the unique imperial ambiance of the city, which both residents and tourists eagerly embrace. Ferdinand Waldmüller’s clear paintings aim to charm us with the renowned “Viennese coziness,” prompting us to look beyond the well-promoted images to uncover hidden tragedies.
The gilding of medieval altars and Klimt’s golden masterpieces, alongside the sparks of intellectual life and Viennese humor in the somber works of Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka, contribute to the brilliance of this renowned palace’s collection. What truly reveals the essence of the (former imperial) capital? The answers await in the galleries of Belvedere Palace.
