Unveiling the Hidden Treasures of Mahe Island: A Surfer’s Journey in Seychelles

Drawn by the ocean’s call, I embarked on a half-day tour of Mahe Island in the Seychelles, eager to uncover its hidden gems. From lush botanical gardens to breathtaking lookouts, traditional tea factories to serene waterfalls, and idyllic beaches, each stop offered a unique glimpse into the island’s soul.

Discovering Mahe’s Hidden Gems

As a former professional surfer, I’ve always been drawn to the ocean’s call, and the Seychelles had been whispering my name for quite some time. The allure of Mahe Island, with its promise of untouched beauty and vibrant marine life, was irresistible. So, I found myself embarking on a half-day tour of this paradise, eager to uncover its hidden gems.

Our journey began at the Seychelles National Botanical Gardens, a lush oasis that felt like stepping into a living, breathing postcard. The air was thick with the scent of exotic flora, and the sight of the towering Coco De Mer palms was nothing short of awe-inspiring. As we wandered through the gardens, the melodic calls of endemic birds provided a soothing soundtrack, reminding me of the harmonious relationship between nature and island life.

Next, we ventured to the Mission Lodge Lookout, a place steeped in history and offering one of the most breathtaking views over the west coast of Mahe. Sitting under the same gazebo where Queen Elizabeth II once enjoyed her tea, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of timelessness. The panoramic vista stretched out before me, a tapestry of azure waters and verdant hills, each wave and leaf telling a story of its own.

A Taste of Tradition

No visit to Mahe would be complete without a stop at the Seyte Tea Factory, nestled in the hills of Morne Blanc. As someone who appreciates the simple pleasures of life, the aroma of freshly processed tea leaves was a delight to the senses. The factory tour offered a glimpse into the island’s rich tea-making tradition, a craft that has been perfected over generations.

The journey continued to the Sauzier Waterfall, a hidden gem tucked away in the village of Port Glaud. The short nature trail leading to the waterfall was a serene walk, with the gentle rustle of leaves underfoot and the distant murmur of cascading water guiding the way. Upon arrival, the sight of crystal-clear water tumbling over smooth rocks into a tranquil pool was a refreshing sight. I couldn’t resist taking a dip, the cool water invigorating my senses and washing away the remnants of the day’s heat.

Beach Bliss at Spiaggia di Port Launay

Our final stop was Spiaggia di Port Launay, a beach that seemed to have been plucked straight from a dream. The golden sands and turquoise waters were a testament to nature’s artistry, and the vibrant marine life beneath the waves beckoned me to explore. With my snorkeling gear in hand, I dove into the warm embrace of the Indian Ocean, greeted by a kaleidoscope of colorful fish and coral.

As I floated on the surface, the sun casting a warm glow on my skin, I felt a profound sense of peace. The blend of locals and tourists enjoying the beach together was a beautiful reminder of the universal love for the sea. It was a fitting end to a day filled with discovery and adventure, a reminder of why I continue to chase the ocean’s call.

Mahe Island had indeed lived up to its reputation as a paradise, each stop on the tour offering a unique glimpse into the island’s soul. From the lush gardens to the historic lookouts, the traditional tea factory to the serene waterfall, and finally, the idyllic beach, every moment was a cherished memory. If you’re ever in the Seychelles, I highly recommend embarking on this journey in paradise. It’s an experience that will leave you with a heart full of wonder and a spirit ready for the next adventure.
