Surfing the Salish Sea: A Whale of an Adventure
Trading my surfboard for a catamaran, I embarked on a whale watching tour in Victoria. The promise of witnessing orcas and humpback whales in their natural habitat was too tempting to resist. Join me as I recount this unforgettable adventure on the Salish Sea.
Setting Sail on the Salish Sea
As a seasoned surfer, I’ve spent countless hours riding the waves and soaking up the sun in Central America. But when I heard about the Whale Watching Tour in Victoria, I knew I had to trade my surfboard for a catamaran, at least for an afternoon. The promise of witnessing the majestic orcas and humpback whales in their natural habitat was too tempting to resist.
The adventure began at Victoria’s scenic Inner Harbour, where the Salish Sea Eclipse awaited. This state-of-the-art catamaran, with its three viewing decks, promised a comfortable and immersive experience. As we set sail, the sun was still high, casting a golden glow over the water. The crew, a group of knowledgeable marine mammal experts, welcomed us aboard and shared stories of the sea creatures we were about to encounter.
A Dance with Giants
The Salish Sea is a place where the ocean’s giants come to play, and we were lucky enough to witness their dance. As we cut through the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the anticipation was palpable. It wasn’t long before we spotted a pod of orcas, their sleek bodies slicing through the water in unison. The crew’s excitement was infectious as they identified each whale by name, sharing tales of their family histories.
For a surfer like me, accustomed to the rhythm of the waves, watching these magnificent creatures glide effortlessly through the water was a humbling experience. The orcas were joined by a group of humpback whales, their massive tails slapping the surface in a playful display. It was a reminder of the ocean’s vastness and the incredible life it sustains.
Sunset Serenity
As the sun began its descent, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, we turned back towards Victoria. The journey back was a time for reflection, the beauty of the sunset mirroring the tranquility of the sea. The crew continued to share their knowledge, pointing out landmarks like the iconic Ogden Point Terminal and the historic Empress Hotel.
The tour ended as the last rays of sunlight dipped below the horizon, leaving us with memories of a day well spent. For those who, like me, find solace in the ocean, the Whale Watching Tour is a must-do. It’s a chance to connect with the sea in a new way, to witness its wonders and to be reminded of the beauty that lies beneath its surface.
