- Vermont State House - The tour kicks off with a drive to Montpelier, the capital city of Vermont. With a population of just under 8,000, it holds the title of the least populous state capital in the United States. Participants will enjoy a guided tour of the Vermont State House*, where a knowledgeable guide will share historical insights and answer any questions. The Vermont State House is among the oldest and most well-preserved state capitols in the nation. Even after 140 years, it remains a prominent feature in Montpelier, with the House and Senate chambers being the oldest legislative chambers still in their original state in the United States.
- The Vermont State House is closed to visitors on Saturdays and Sundays. Weekend tours will therefore admire the state house from the outside and then explore downtown Montpelier on foot.
- Morse Farm Maple Sugarworks - Discover one of Vermont’s cherished maple traditions at Morse Farm Maple Sugarworks, a family-operated sugarhouse located just minutes from downtown Montpelier. The Morse family has been producing some of the finest pure Vermont maple syrup for generations, using traditional methods passed down through the years.
Visitors will witness the enchanting process of transforming sap into syrup — from tree to tap to the steaming sugarhouse — and enjoy generous tastings of golden, amber, and dark maple syrup. Be sure to try their renowned maple creemees, a Vermont classic often hailed as the best in the state.
-
Waitsfield - The next stop is at one of Vermont’s oldest covered bridges, “The Big Eddy,” in Waitsfield. Built in 1833 and located in the heart of the Mad River Valley, Waitsfield offers a delightful glimpse into small-town America. The Mad River Valley is nestled between two popular ski resorts, Sugarbush and Mad River Glen. Visitors will have time to explore the town, which boasts many unique local shops.
-
Warren - The following stop is in the village of Warren, where lunch can be purchased at the Warren Store. As a member of the Vermont Fresh Network, The Warren Store is known for its delicious food, popular among locals. A favorite dining spot is outside on their picnic tables by the brook, accompanied by the soothing sounds of the Mad River. The Warren Store includes a deli, bakery, wine shop, and gift store. It is a short walk from the Warren Covered Bridge, which spans the Mad River and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
-
Mad River Glen - The final attraction is a drive past Mad River Glen (a single chair lift ski resort) to the top of Appalachian Gap (elevation 2,369 feet). Appalachian Gap is a mountain pass that intersects with the Long Trail, a 270-mile footpath extending from Massachusetts to Quebec. From the summit of Appalachian Gap, visitors will enjoy breathtaking views of the Champlain Valley and the Adirondack Mountains.
