- Piazza San Marco - Begin your journey at Saint Mark’s Square with this enchanting walking tour that will lead you away from the bustling streets into the hidden gems of the Castello area. A knowledgeable guide will escort you through the secret squares, meandering canals, and historic buildings, offering a wonderful introduction to the origins, symbols, traditions, architecture, and contemporary life in Venice.
The tour commences with a historical overview of St. Mark’s Square and its architectural marvels, allowing you to uncover the history of the magnificent St. Mark’s Basilica, the renowned Doge’s Palace, once the power center of the Republic of Venice, and the remarkable Renaissance clock tower.
- Campo Santa Maria Formosa - Departing from the square, you will be led into the residential Castello area, enabling you to explore this elegant part of Venice through its maze of narrow alleys - “calli”, numerous bridges, winding canals, and expansive picturesque squares - “campi”.
Expect to discover Campo Santa Maria Formosa, one of Venice’s largest squares, featuring its church named after the visitation of the Holy Virgin.
- Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo - At Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo, you can admire the famous church, the resting place of several Doges, and the equestrian monument of Bartolomeo Colleoni, an Italian mercenary captain.
- Casa di Marco Polo - Visit the former residence of Marco Polo in Corte Seconda del Milion, arguably the most famous Venetian merchant.
- Teatro Malibran - The Malibran Theatre (exterior only) is also included in the itinerary. The theatre of San Giovanni Grisostomo was constructed in just four months at the end of 1677. It has undergone numerous renovations, with the 1919 renovation giving us the theatre as it is known today.
-
Doge’s Palace - Your guide will take you to the Doge’s Palace, which dominates Saint Mark’s Square, the heart of Venice, standing out for its size and extraordinary structure, where Byzantine, European, and Oriental architecture converge. Upon entering the Palace, you will pass through the grand courtyard and admire the intricate details on the famous Golden Staircase.
Once inside, you will explore the halls where the Duke (Doge) and his Council governed the fate of the Serene Republic, surrounded by hundreds of artistic masterpieces, and learn about the political history of Venice and its people. You will have the opportunity to admire paintings by some of the most significant artists of the Italian Renaissance, including the world’s largest oil painting by Tintoretto. Crossing the famous Bridge of Sighs, you will reach the new prisons. The bridge was named by the English poet Lord Byron, likely referring to the last sigh of the prisoners, who had their final view of the lagoon and Venice from the bridge’s window before being imprisoned. -
Basilica di San Marco - In the second part of the tour, you will visit the Basilica, once the private chapel of the Doge of Venice, and unique in Italy due to its opulent golden mosaics and impressive marble inlay flooring.
During the tour, you will have the chance to sit in the church and soak in the atmosphere while listening to your guide describe the biblical scenes depicted throughout the building, along with the history and unique features of this ancient Basilica.
The tour includes a visit to the famous Pala d’Oro, an altarpiece made of gold and silver, and a stunning example of Byzantine art adorned with a multitude of gems and precious stones. - Museo Correr - At the conclusion of the tour, retain your Doge’s Palace ticket to independently visit: Museo Correr, Museo Archeologico Nazionale, and the Monumental Rooms of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana in Saint Mark’s Square, opposite the Saint Mark’s Basilica.
