- Negozio Olivetti - The tour begins at the Olivetti Showroom located in St. Mark’s Square. This site exemplifies modern architectural interaction between interior and exterior spaces. The showroom evokes the theme of water through several decorative elements: a gentle stream flows in an ornamental fountain on the ground floor, and small colored glass tiles cover the floor, reflecting light to mimic the shimmering water effect seen in St. Mark’s Square during high tide. Large windows allow ample light to enter, reflecting off the fountain’s water and the gray-purplish stucco walls. The floor colors gradually fade as they extend away from the windows. The showroom is adorned with local materials like glass, marble, stone, and wood, beautifully combined to create an elegant setting for displaying Olivetti typewriters. These machines from the 1950s and 1960s are showcased as if they were ‘jewels in a museum.’
- Fondazione Querini Stampalia - Carlo Scarpa’s pursuit of harmony between natural elements and architectural space is beautifully demonstrated at Venice’s Querini Stampalia Foundation, the next stop on the tour. Scarpa reinforced the building and renovated both the museum’s entrance hall and the palace’s garden. He reclaimed an open section of the building, previously unused due to frequent flooding, by elevating it from the ground floor and transforming it into a walkway for visitors. Water entering the ground floor is contained by a parapet wall and directed into the rear garden. This solution gives water an aesthetic value while allowing it to coexist harmoniously with the building’s other architectural elements. This modern reinterpretation of an ancient building makes the former Querini Stampalia residence a twentieth-century architectural masterpiece. Carlo Scarpa’s project continues to inspire the mission of the Querini Stampalia Foundation: fostering dialogue with society by creating a space for interaction and cultural exchange among the people of Venice.

Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) was one of the most influential architects in the 20th-century Italy, who skillfully interpreted Venice’s traditional architecture from a modern perspective. Since his early career, as artistic designer for Cappellin and Venini glass makers in Murano, Carlo Scarpa began to explore the vast potential of glass. By resuming ancient handcrafting processes and trying new glass blowing techniques, he developed chromatic and geometric solutions that changed Italian glass production forever. Since then, an innovative use of traditional raw materials has remained a distinctive feature of his works.
