- Piazza San Marco - St. Mark’s Square is the heart of Venice, where people gather to see and be seen. It is the only square in Venice with the title “piazza,” while others are called “campo.” Since the days of the Republic, this piazza has been the center of market activities and civic and religious life. It is considered one of the world’s finest squares and Venice’s main attraction, surrounded on three sides by elegant arcades of public buildings and on the fourth by Basilica di San Marco and Campanile.
- Basilica di San Marco - Known as the ‘Golden Basilica’ due to the dominant color of its mosaics and the numerous treasures it holds, St. Mark’s Basilica blends faith with the grandeur of the ancient Republic of Venice. With its five domes, intricately carved façade featuring bas-reliefs, sculptures, and mosaics, St. Mark’s Church in Venice is a priceless treasure.
- Campanile di San Marco - Adding a vertical dimension to the broad expanse of Piazza San Marco is the campanile, the tall brick bell tower of the basilica. It stands above the corner of the arcaded Procuratie Nuove, connecting the Piazza and the Piazzetta. The campanile is so tall that it served as a beacon for approaching ships. Construction began in the 10th century and was completed in the 12th century, with its pointed roof and gilded pinnacle added in the 15th century. On July 14, 1902, it collapsed into the piazza, but by 1912, it was rebuilt ‘as it was and where it was.’
