A Warm Welcome in Varmahlíð

As a marine biologist, my adventures often take me to the ocean’s depths, but this time, I found myself drawn to the glacial rivers of Iceland. The allure of the West Glacial River, with its promise of gentle rapids and natural hot springs, was irresistible. Upon arriving at the rafting base in Hafgrímsstaðir, I was greeted not only by the friendly staff but also by two adorable puppies. Their playful antics set the tone for what would be an unforgettable day.

Our guides, Andy and Anup, were exceptional. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and their professionalism was evident from the start. After a brief but thorough safety briefing, we were suited up in drysuits, ready to tackle the river. The anticipation was palpable as we boarded the bus for a short ride to the river’s edge. The landscape was breathtaking, with glacial canyons stretching as far as the eye could see. It was a reminder of nature’s raw beauty, a theme that would continue throughout the day.

Riding the Rapids

The river welcomed us with open arms, its gentle rapids providing just the right amount of thrill. Andy expertly guided our raft, ensuring that even the youngest members of our group felt safe and secure. Meanwhile, Anup, in his kayak, captured every moment with his camera, ensuring that our memories would be preserved in vibrant detail.

As we navigated the river, the wind added an exhilarating element to our journey. The drysuits kept us warm and dry, allowing us to fully enjoy the experience without the discomfort of cold water. Halfway through our adventure, we paused for a break, and Andy surprised us with a treat – hot chocolate made from the water of a nearby hot spring. The warmth of the drink was a delightful contrast to the coolness of the river, and it quickly became a highlight of the trip.

A Refreshing Dip

The latter part of our journey offered an opportunity for a more immersive experience. With the larger portion of the river ahead, we were invited to jump in and float alongside the raft. The sensation of the glacial water against the drysuit was invigorating, a refreshing reminder of the power and purity of nature.

As our adventure came to an end, I reflected on the day’s experiences.
