A Coffee Lover’s Dream

As a nomadic surfer, my life is usually spent chasing the perfect wave, but every now and then, I find myself drawn to the lush landscapes of Costa Rica’s interior. This time, it was the allure of the La Paz Waterfalls and the promise of a coffee plantation tour that pulled me away from the coast. My wife and I, always eager for a new adventure, decided to explore the Poás de Alajuela area, a region known for its rich coffee culture and breathtaking natural beauty.

Our journey began with a stop at a local coffee plantation, where we were introduced to the “golden grain” of Costa Rica. The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans filled the air as we wandered through rows of coffee bushes, learning about the intricate process that transforms these humble plants into the beloved beverage that fuels our early morning surf sessions. His enthusiasm was particularly engaging for the younger members of our group, who were captivated by his stories and eager to learn more.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the La Paz Waterfall Gardens. As we hiked along the well-maintained trails, we were treated to a symphony of sights and sounds. The roar of the waterfalls was a constant companion, a reminder of nature’s raw power and beauty. We took our time, savoring each moment and allowing the tranquility of the rainforest to wash over us. The children in our group were particularly enchanted by the animal sanctuary, where they encountered creatures they had only ever seen in books or on television.

A Feast for the Senses

After a morning of exploration, we were treated to a buffet-style lunch in the heart of the rainforest. The food was a delightful mix of local flavors, a feast that satisfied both our hunger and our curiosity. As we dined, we shared stories and laughter, bonding over the shared experience of this incredible day.

The afternoon was spent exploring more of the park’s attractions, including the largest butterfly observatory in the country and a hummingbird gallery that left us all in awe. The children were particularly thrilled by the serpentarium and the frog exhibition, their eyes wide with wonder as they learned about these fascinating creatures.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to our starting point, our hearts full and our spirits lifted. The La Paz Waterfalls and the surrounding attractions had provided us with a day of discovery and delight, a reminder of the beauty that lies beyond the waves.
