The Call of the Ocean

As a wildlife photographer with a deep-seated love for Africa, the allure of the ocean’s apex predator, the great white shark, was irresistible. My journey to Van Dyks Bay was fueled by a desire to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat, a dream that had lingered in my heart since my first safari. The promise of an ethical and sustainable encounter with the great whites, offered by the renowned White Shark Projects, was the perfect opportunity to blend my passion for adventure with my commitment to conservation.

Upon arrival, the team at White Shark Projects welcomed us with warm smiles and a hearty breakfast. The briefing that followed was both informative and reassuring, emphasizing safety and the importance of respecting the ocean’s inhabitants. As we set off into the bay, the anticipation was palpable. The crew’s extensive knowledge and genuine care for the environment set the tone for what promised to be an unforgettable experience.

Face to Face with Giants

The moment I had been waiting for arrived as we donned our wetsuits and descended into the cage. The water was a world unto itself, teeming with life and mystery. Just as we settled into the cage, two great white sharks emerged from the depths, their presence both awe-inspiring and humbling.

Ironically, their visit was cut short by a playful group of seals, a reminder of the intricate balance of marine life. The rest of the dive was spent in the company of bronze whaler sharks, whose graceful presence was equally captivating. Back on land, we were treated to hot soup and a debriefing session with Mary, one of the passionate team members at White Shark Projects. Her insights into the plight of sharks and the urgent need for conservation efforts resonated deeply with me. The staggering number of sharks killed each year is a sobering reality, one that underscores the importance of ethical wildlife encounters.

White Shark Projects’ commitment to sustainability extends beyond the water.
