• Vina del Mar - Viña del Mar’s history began with the conquistadors and the division of the Peuco Valley into two large estates: “Seven Sisters,” named for the seven hills between Cerro Castillo and Cerro Barón, and “La Viña del Mar,” named for the vineyards that once grew where Palacio Rioja now stands. Around 1870, Doña Mercedes Álvarez, the sole heiress of these lands, married José Francisco Vergara, an engineer who came to the region for railway projects. He developed a plan, approved on December 29, 1874, officially founding the city of Viña del Mar, and five years later, the Illustrious Municipality.
