Journey to the Heart of Ice: A Columbia Glacier Adventure

Drawn by the allure of the largest tidewater glacier in south-central Alaska, I embarked on a journey from Valdez to the Columbia Glacier. What awaited was a day of awe-inspiring beauty and profound silence, a testament to nature’s grandeur.

Setting Sail from Valdez

The morning air was crisp as I boarded the vessel at the port of Valdez, ready to embark on a journey to the Columbia Glacier. As a former Arctic researcher, I’ve seen my fair share of glaciers, but the promise of exploring the largest tidewater glacier in south-central Alaska was too enticing to resist. The crew, seasoned and welcoming, greeted us with warm smiles, and I could feel the anticipation building among my fellow travelers.

As we set sail, the waters of Prince William Sound stretched out before us, a vast expanse of glacial-carved fjords and rich marine life. The captain, an all-Alaskan seafarer, navigated the passageways with a deft hand, pointing out the wildlife that thrived in this protected part of the ocean. Seals basked on rocky outcrops, eagles soared overhead, and sea lions barked playfully in the distance. Renting a pair of binoculars for a mere $5 proved invaluable, allowing me to witness these creatures in their natural habitat with stunning clarity.

The Majesty of Columbia Glacier

As we approached the Columbia Glacier, the air grew colder, and the landscape transformed into a realm of ice and silence. The captain slowed the vessel, allowing us to take in the breathtaking sight of the glacier’s face. It was a moment of pure awe, the kind that leaves you speechless and humbled by nature’s grandeur. The only sound was the gentle “ca-clunk” of bergie bits brushing against the hull, a reminder of the glacier’s constant, albeit slow, movement.

The captain’s commentary was both informative and heartfelt, a testament to his passion for the region and its preservation. He spoke of the glacier’s history, its current state, and the impact of climate change on its future. It was a sobering reminder of the fragility of these magnificent ice formations, a topic close to my heart given my background in Arctic research.

A Family Affair on the High Seas

The journey was not just about the glacier; it was an experience enriched by the people who made it possible. The crew, professional and friendly, ensured our comfort and safety throughout the trip. Lunch was a delightful affair, with clam chowder, bagels, and Oreos served as we cruised through the icy waters. Hot beverages were available at any time, a welcome comfort against the chill.

I was particularly touched to learn that Stan Stephens Cruises is a family-owned operation, with “grandma” Mary Helen Stephens herself on board. Her presence added a personal touch to the voyage, a reminder of the deep-rooted connection between the family and the region they call home. It was heartening to see such dedication and passion passed down through generations, a legacy of stewardship and love for the Alaskan wilderness.

As we returned to Valdez, the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the Sound. It was a fitting end to a day filled with wonder and discovery, a reminder of the raw beauty and harsh realities of the polar regions. The Columbia Glacier Cruise was more than just a tour; it was a journey into the heart of nature’s majesty, a testament to the power and fragility of the Arctic world.
