Here, visitors can explore the remnants of steam locomotives from the 19th and early 20th centuries, offering a fantastic opportunity for artistic photography.
Museo de la Llama y la Sal - Next, the tour proceeds to the company’s base of operations, where guests can use the hygienic facilities, which include three bathrooms and showers for both men and women. Here, participants also try on boots for the saltwater visit to experience the mirror effect and collect lunch for the group. Arrival at COLCHANI, situated on the edge of the Salar de Uyuni, home to the Rosario Cooperative and 15 rustic salt factories. Visitors can observe the drying of salt in ovens, the crushing process, the mixing of iodine with salt, and the packaging of salt for national and medicinal use.
Salar de Uyuni - Upon reaching the expansive Salar de Uyuni, covering 12 square kilometers, the tour includes visits to the salt eyes (large holes in the salt flat where saltwater emerges under high pressure), the former Playa Blanca salt hotel made entirely of salt, the world flags, the Dakar monument, and a perspective photo session with humorous videos guided by a professional expert driver. Lunch is enjoyed on-site, followed by a 15-minute walk on the salt flat, visits to salt sculptures like the Hand of God and the Salt Pyramid, and observing the mirror effect in the saltwater. The tour then crosses over 100 km of the salt flat, concluding with a sunset view, accompanied by snacks, red wine, cookies, and Pringles. Overnight stay at the salt hostel includes dinner and rest.
Salar de Uyuni - Post-dinner, the tour returns to the Salar de Uyuni, an exceptional location for stargazing. The absence of light pollution, pristine air, vast night skies, and breathtaking surroundings make it one of the world’s premier stargazing destinations. Stargazing tours are available year-round, except during adverse weather and full moon nights, as the moon’s brightness can hinder star visibility. It’s advisable to check the lunar calendar and stargazing tour plan to ensure a well-prepared stargazing experience.
Day 2: Salt Hotel, Cactus Island, Tunupa Volcano
Uyuni - At 5:00 am, the day begins with a sunrise view from the salt flat, followed by breakfast at the hotel. The tour then heads to the Cave of the Galaxies, a now-dry sub-aqueous cavern formed before the freezing stage, resulting from volcanic eruptions over Lake Minchin (now Salar). Its unique formation differs from terrestrial caves, featuring calcareous bodies projecting from the ceiling, shaped by magma solidification upon contact with water.
Tunupa Volcano - After exploring the island, the tour continues approximately 40 km to the Tunupa Volcano. At the volcano’s base, on the salt flat’s edge, visitors can see small groups of flamingos and llama herds. The vehicle ascends to a parking platform at 4200 m, from where a walk leads to the volcano’s mummy cave. An optional two-hour hike to the first viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the Uyuni salt flat and the volcano’s crater. The tour concludes with a return to Uyuni, ending around 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
