Salar de Uyuni - Duration: 10:30 am to 7:15 pm
Distance: 145 km (90 mi) 4WD expedition / 50 min hiking
Altitude: 3650m (11,975 ft)
Difficulty: Easy (High altitude)
The adventure kicks off at 10:30 am (pickup arrangements should be made with our team). The first stop is the ‘Train Cemetery,’ an open-air museum featuring abandoned 19th-century locomotives (from 1940) that hold significant historical value for Bolivia. There will be ample time for photos and insights from our local guide. The journey continues to the quaint town of ‘Colchani,’ situated on the edge of the Salt Flats. This town is known for its alpaca, vicuña crafts, and unique salt decorations, as well as its salt miners who process salt for local sale. (Not long ago, 31 kilos of salt cost just 0.90 US dollars, can you believe it?). Colchani is also home to the world’s only salt hotels, including Palacio de Sal, Luna Salada, and Cristal Samana.
Ready to explore the world’s largest salt desert? This is where the true adventure begins! We enter the salt flats around 12:30, visiting sites like the ‘Eyes of Salt,’ ‘Salt Crystals,’ and the renowned ‘Dakar’ statue (celebrating the automobile event known for its dangerous routes in Bolivia). We venture deeper into the desert to enjoy a picnic lunch in the heart of the Salar, a perfect moment to feel small and at peace.
With full stomachs, it’s time to explore! We will visit the famous Incahuasi Island, a small island filled with giant cacti that can reach over 10 meters in height. Believe it or not, this island is a massive coral formation offering stunning landscapes and the best views of Salar de Uyuni. The exploration will last about 50 minutes (it’s advised to walk calmly and carefully).
Important note: During the rainy season from January to April, the salt flat is flooded, and for safety reasons, access to Isla Incahuasi, Isla Pescado, Tunupa Volcano, and other destinations where water could damage vehicle engines is restricted.
Returning to the island’s edge, we reunite with our driver to head to a secluded spot for fun perspective photos. It’s time for a celebration! Together in the middle of the salt, we’ll await the sunset and enjoy a complimentary toast. We’ll return to the town of Uyuni around 7 pm to 7:30 pm, where you’ll be dropped off at the airport, bus station, or your hotel in Uyuni or Colchani.
