- Utrecht - Embark on a cultural and historical walking tour of Utrecht and explore the stunning architecture and vibrant cultural scene of this charming city. Conveniently situated in the heart of the country, Utrecht is accessible by direct train from Amsterdam (30 min), Rotterdam (45 min), and Amersfoort (15 min).
- Vredenburg market - Begin your private tour at Vredenburgplein, ideally located in the city center. On Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, the square hosts a bustling market. Observe the numerous fish stalls and the delightful stroopwafels being freshly made. As this is a private tour, feel free to inform your guide if you wish to explore the market.
- Oudegracht - The historic Oudegracht is a 2-km long canal running through the city from north to south. Maartensbrug, the bridge near the Dom Tower, spans a section of the canal that dates back to Roman times. It is the oldest surviving bridge, built in the early 1400s (1404).
There are over 730 wharf cellars along Utrecht’s canals, with cellars adjacent to the wharfs for immediate storage of goods after unloading ships. The oldest known wharf dates back to 1150, when a merchant created a tunnel from his house’s basement to the canal bank. Later, the cellars served as breweries and marketplaces. From 1900, many wharf cellars fell into disrepair due to the rise of road freight. Post-WWII, restoration of the cellars, wharfs, and quay walls commenced.
Notice the numerous restaurants along the canal. They are situated in the cellars and use the wharfs as terraces. The ambiance is delightful, especially in the evenings with the various lights.
- Pandhof Domkerk - Originally a 15th-century monastery garden, Pandhof is now a public space where tranquility can still be found.
This secluded part of Utrecht is a charming ornamental garden with authentic monastery garden elements. In past centuries, it served as a fairground, soldiers’ guard room, and meat market. Culinary herbs, dye-producing, and medicinal plants now flourish there. Together with the statue of the reading canon (a clergyman), the courtyard presents a picturesque scene.
- Neude - Until the late 15th century, this square was a marshy area. Due to the need for land, the swampy ground was reinforced and elevated with sand, stones, and debris. From the 15th to the 19th centuries, the square functioned as a market square, and executions also took place here.
Until the 1990s, the square was a parking lot, but it has since become a festival square with numerous cafés. The name translates to “swampy ground.”
- Dom Tower - The Dom Tower is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. It was part of the Cathedral of Saint Martin, also known as Dom Church, but the cathedral was never fully completed due to financial constraints.
Since the unfinished nave collapsed in 1674, it has stood as a free-standing tower, located at the site where the city of Utrecht was founded nearly 2,000 years ago.
- Stadskasteel Oudaen - The typical final stop of this walking tour is Vredenburgplein, the square where the tour began. However, you can also continue with your guide to city castle Oudaen for a beer tasting (not included).
This city castle, built in 1276, is one of Utrecht’s most significant monuments. Enjoy three different beers and learn about the history of this remarkable building. You are welcome to remain at Oudaen after your guide departs.
