The Journey Begins

As a wildlife photographer with a deep love for Africa, I was thrilled to embark on the Living Among Lions tour, a popular Serengeti adventure that promised to explore the wonders of Ngorongoro, Manyara, and Tarangire. The anticipation was palpable as I boarded my flight from Washington, D.C., to Ethiopia, with the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro greeting me upon descent. The journey was long, but the excitement of what lay ahead kept my spirits high.

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, I was warmly welcomed by my guide, Heaven, whose reputation preceded him. His genuine smile and enthusiasm set the tone for what would become an unforgettable adventure. After a brief stay at The African Tulip to acclimate to the time difference, I was ready to dive into the heart of Tanzania’s wilderness.

Into the Wild

Our first destination was Tarangire National Park, a place teeming with wildlife and breathtaking landscapes. As we drove through the park, the sight of wildebeests and zebras grazing in the open plains was a photographer’s dream. Heaven’s knowledge of the local fauna was impressive, and his passion for wildlife was evident as he shared insights about the animals we encountered.

The highlight of the day was spotting a cheetah under a small tree, poised and ready to hunt. Heaven’s ability to interpret the animal’s body language was remarkable, and witnessing the cheetah in action was a thrilling experience. The day ended with a comfortable stay in a tented camp, where the sounds of the African night lulled me to sleep.

The Serengeti and Beyond

The Serengeti, with its endless plains and diverse wildlife, was everything I had imagined and more. The sight of the Great Migration, with wildebeests and zebras stretching as far as the eye could see, was a spectacle I had longed to capture since childhood. Heaven’s expertise ensured we were always in the right place at the right time, witnessing the drama of nature unfold before our eyes.

A hot air balloon ride over the Mara River offered a unique perspective of the landscape, and the champagne breakfast that followed was a delightful treat. The adventure continued with a visit to the Ngorongoro Crater, where we witnessed a pride of lions in action and spotted the elusive black rhino. Each day brought new surprises and unforgettable moments, all made possible by the exceptional guidance of Heaven and the team at Soul of Tanzania.

This journey was not just a safari; it was a profound connection with the natural world, a reminder of the beauty and fragility of our planet. As I reflect on this experience, I am grateful for the opportunity to document and share the wonders of Tanzania, inspiring others to embark on their own adventures with a focus on sustainability and respect for wildlife.
