- Falls of Shin - Travel along the winding road through Achany Glen, beside the winding River Shin, to a clearing in the pine forest where the magnificent Atlantic salmon leap up the roaring falls in a brave effort to return upstream.
Each summer, the fish journey back from the open ocean, swimming up the Dornoch Firth and the Kyle of Sutherland, aiming to reach further up the River Shin to their spawning grounds. However, before reaching their destination, they must overcome the powerful cascade at the Falls.
From the viewing platform, visitors can watch the salmon as they attempt to leap out of the water. Some succeed on their first try, while others must jump repeatedly. The platform also offers excellent views both upstream and downstream of the River Shin, a favored fishing spot in Northern Scotland. (The best time to see the salmon is between May and September.)
- Dunrobin Castle and Gardens - This stop includes entry to the Castle, Castle Gardens, and Falconry Display. Dunrobin Castle is one of Scotland’s oldest inhabited homes. The falconry display is impressive and sure to captivate visitors.
- Loch Fleet - Continue to Loch Fleet to enjoy a magical mix of wildlife, coastal scenery, and pinewoods. If the weather and timing are favorable, seals may be seen basking on the sands. The reserve is located on the east side of the A9 in Sutherland, between Dornoch and Golspie.
- Dornoch - The name ‘Dornoch’ comes from the Gaelic for ‘pebbly place,’ indicating the area had fist-sized pebbles (dorn) that could be used as weapons. Dornoch features the thirteenth-century Dornoch Cathedral, the Old Town Jail, and the former Bishop’s Palace, now the renowned Dornoch Castle Hotel, as well as a notable golf course, the Royal Dornoch Golf Club, ranked the 5th best golf course outside the United States. It is also known as the last place a witch was executed in Scotland. Her name was Janet Horne; she was tried and executed in 1727. A stone, the Witch’s Stone, commemorates her death, inscribed with the year 1722. Duration: 30 minutes.
